Yordas Group stores a large amount of data about chemical substances. Our main database, Hive, contains over 294,000 substances that have been included in more than 2,300 individual lists and regulations. The information sources for this data come from government and industry, though the quality, usability and structure of the data are inconsistent.
Responsibilities
- Work with new data sources and apply extraction rules, including output format and handling requirements.
- Collaborate with data project owners to establish job priorities and ensure that input and output documents associated with extraction jobs are organized and managed correctly.
- Understand key data present in new source documents by working with subject matter experts.
- Perform quality control of the output of new extractions.
- Transform raw structured data extractions to established upload formats and standards.
- Refine the data load process in collaboration with systems developers and contribute to product development.
Other Tasks
- Assist colleagues in the wider team with data manipulation tasks.
- Contribute to discussions about approaches and best practices within the data team.
- Design reusable tools and automated methods to assist all aspects of data management.
Qualifications
- Experience with Python, R, or other languages suitable for data work.
- Use of data extraction and handling packages such as Pandas and Numpy.
- Experience with Excel or Google Sheets.
- Logical and analytical skills.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work to specifications with a questioning attitude.
- Basic qualification of A Grade 4/C in Maths and English GCSE or equivalent.
- Interest in sustainability and chemical regulations.
Desirable Skills
- Experience with relational structured data sets (e.g., SQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL).
- Experience with web scraping methods and packages.
- Advance level qualifications in Chemistry, Mathematics or Computer Science.
- Previous experience in a STEM undergraduate program (not essential).
- Remote working experience.
