About IT Services

IT Services at the University of Manchester is a vibrant and fast‑moving department, we focus on delivering excellent customer service and quality services for our staff, students and researchers.

The Team

The Security Architecture and Engineering team plays a vital role in protecting the University’s digital assets. We work collaboratively across faculties, projects and support services to design and implement secure technology solutions. Our team is focused on enabling the University to innovate while staying secure and resilient against cyber threats. We’re passionate about building a strong, adaptable security posture that’s ready for the future of higher education.

The Role

We’re looking for a Cyber Security Engineer to help design, implement and maintain secure systems and services across the University. Working closely with cyber security architects, project teams and other IT professionals, you’ll contribute to everything from defining technical controls to validating security solutions.

You’ll help ensure that new and existing technologies are "secure by design," using a mix of best practice, innovation and collaboration. This role offers a unique opportunity to influence how the University manages cyber risk while enabling digital transformation across research, teaching and support services.

The Person

The ideal candidate will bring experience in delivering cyber security solutions within complex environments. You’ll understand security fundamentals and be able to apply them creatively to evolving technologies.

You will bring hands‑on experience in securing cloud computing platforms, particularly Microsoft Azure and AWS. You have expertise in applying security controls across platforms like M365.

Ensuring secure identity and access management and configuring cloud‑native tools to detect and respond to threats.

Experience with container security, Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and DevSecOps practices will be a real plus.

You’ll be someone who enjoys solving problems, sharing knowledge and finding ways to improve how things work. A collaborative mindset and an interest in continuous learning are essential.
