Customs & Compliance Officer
Location: Essex
Salary: £35,000 - £45,000 DOE
Job Overview
Manage all customs and border compliance activities affecting ocean and road freight operations, ensuring smooth, efficient, and compliant cargo flow.
- Liaise with national and local Port and Customs authorities, and secure/maintain key authorisations such as AEO, Bonded Warehouse and Temporary Storage.
- Serve as the organisation's subject‑matter expert for customs matters, supporting both road and ocean teams across multiple sites.
- Create, update and deliver internal procedures, KPIs, compliance reports, and process documentation.
- Support and improve a wide range of operational and customs‑related IT systems.
- Investigate and resolve customs issues that could impact vessel schedules, port turnaround, or road freight timelines.
- Drive ongoing process improvement and contribute to operational efficiency across both transport modes.
Job Requirements
- Hands‑on experience with import/export procedures, customs declarations, and border compliance.
- Exposure to ocean freight, road transport, or port operations is highly desirable.
- Experience liaising with customs authorities, port authorities, or carriers.
- Familiarity with compliance reporting and operational processes in a fast‑paced logistics environment.
- Fluent in English; additional European languages are beneficial.
