Job description

Our well‑established client law firm based in Hertfordshire/Bedfordshire is currently seeking Criminal Duty Solicitors to join their established team in the Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and Essex Courts. The successful Duty Solicitors will be managing their own caseload and will be representing clients in a mixture of criminal law matters, where you will be liaising with Courts, CPS, Police, Counsel and any other professional body.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interview and advise clients.
  • Undertake casework, managing the case from inception to conclusion.
  • Administer casework and keep case management system up to date.
  • Ensure that casework is promptly and efficiently billed and send bills to private clients and claim interim payments from the Legal Aid Agency when appropriate.
  • Regularly review cases.
  • Attend Court (including Saturday Court) to deal with clients.
  • Keep up to date with changes in law and practice.
  • Attend training courses.
  • Attend Police Station when required even outside normal hours.
  • Hold the 24 hour Emergency Line as requested.
  • Attend police stations and Magistrates' Courts as part of the Duty Solicitor rota.
  • Advise and represent clients at all stages of criminal proceedings.
  • Prepare cases for trial and liaise with counsel as required.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Admission as a Solicitor and holding the CLAS certificate (Duty).
  • Experience of Legal Aid practice.
  • Knowledge of billing and legal procedures.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to prioritise and manage casework.
  • Car ownership (if required).

Salary

£30,000 – £35,000 (DOE)
