We are seeking a proactive and creative Communications Assistant to join our fast-paced, forward-thinking communications team. Based at MOD Lyneham, this role helps shape the voice of The Defence School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering (DSEME). Working closely with the Communications Manager, you will support the day-to-day delivery of communications, press, and public relations—driving awareness, safeguarding reputation, and ensuring our message is clear and impactful. If you are passionate about storytelling, media engagement, and making a real difference, this could be the role for you.

Overview

As our Communications Assistant, you will help develop and deliver engaging communication strategies that spotlight our three units — 8 Training Battalion REME, The REME Arms School, and No 4 School of Technical Training. You will take a hands-on role in crafting compelling content, while building strong relationships across DSEME, the Defence College of Technical Training, and the wider Defence community. You will contribute to corporate and internal communications, supporting policy updates, announcements, and crisis communications as needed, maintaining consistency in tone and alignment with MOD branding. Working with the Mitie Communications Manager and unit teams, you will contribute your flair for communications to multi-channel campaigns, bringing the breadth and depth of our training delivery to life.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and deliver engaging communication strategies for DSEME units.
  • Craft compelling content and manage multi-channel campaigns.
  • Monitor media coverage and sentiment; use insights to inform recommendations.
  • Support policy updates, announcements, and crisis communications.
  • Coordinate internal and external visits; liaise with media, photographers, MT, and the Mess as needed.
  • Support other team members and contribute to a safe working environment.
Qualifications
  • Natural storyteller with experience in PR, media relations, or communications.
  • Ability to turn complex ideas into engaging narratives with strong writing, judgement, and risk awareness.
  • Proactive, hands-on, and able to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in the Defence sector is a bonus; the role requires being purpose-driven and eager to amplify the voice and reputation of the Defence School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering.
Benefits
  • Virtual GP for you and household members; video or phone access.
  • Salary Finance scheme for financial wellbeing, with options such as early access to earned pay and loans.
  • Flexible lifestyle benefits via Choices platform, including optional extra holidays, insurance, dental treatment, and technology purchases.
  • MiDeals for discounts; cycle-to-work scheme; life cover up to four times salary; enhanced pension contributions; save-as-you-earn; and Mitie Matching Share Plan.
  • Recognition through Mitie Stars with monthly prizes and a potential £10,000 top prize annually.
  • Training and development opportunities across a wide range of learning resources.
