A large healthcare organization in Wolverhampton is seeking a Consultant in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery. The successful applicant will deliver UGI and general surgical services, contributing to both emergency and elective surgeries across multiple sites. Candidates should possess a fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons and have experience in acute surgical management. Opportunities for research and education are also available.

Qualifications

  • The successful applicant must possess fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT or CESR at the time of interview.
  • Experience and/or interest in both the non-operative and operative management of oesophogastric surgery is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Provide UGI and general surgical services in theatre, outpatient, and ward settings.
  • Contribute to the general surgery emergency rota and the UGI weekend rota.
  • Engage with research, audit, governance, and education in the UGI unit.

Skills

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust is a reputable large tertiary and district general hospital that provides good clinical outcomes across a comprehensive range of services. It has a record of achieving high quality care for its patients.

We are one of the largest acute and community providers in the west Midlands having more than 850 beds on the New Cross Hospital site. The Trust also has 56 rehabilitation beds at West Park Hospital and 54 beds at Cannock Chase Hospital

We are the largest employer in Wolverhampton; the Trust employs close to 10,000 staff covering more than 350 different roles.

You will join a general surgical department which includes Upper-GI, Colorectal, Breast and Vascular Services. The Upper GI Surgical Team has four Consultants.

Main duties of the job

We are looking to appoint a UGI Consultant to join the team who has an interest in Benign UGI and HPB Surgery who is keen to lead on developing the service for the future

The successful applicants will provide UGI and general surgical services in a theatre, outpatient, and ward setting.

Minimally invasive surgery is well established within the surgical service, including Robotic assisted colorectal surgery. There is an opportunity to develop this within the UGI field subject to the necessary training.

There are separate specialty rotas for seven-day services, and it is expected that the successful candidate will contribute to both the general surgery emergency rota (1 in 14) and the UGI weekend rota,

The Trust has two sites for out-patient and elective surgical activity at New Cross Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital. As part of the team, you will be expected to participate in delivering services on both sites.
