Job description

We are seeking to recruit a Consultant / Specialist doctor with specialist skills in integrated sexual health and HIV medicine (including leading outpatient HIV clinics, management of sexually transmitted infection & contraception). The appointee will contribute to the Clinical Governance program within the wider axess sexual health service and will have the opportunity to participate in research supported by our research lead and dedicated research nurse, depending on individual experience and interest. Less than full-time working (LFTW) and timetable flexibility are available. Dependent on skills, experience and entry on the GMC Specialist register the successful candidate will be offered either a substantive Consultant contract or a Specialist doctor (2021) contract on the associated national English contract pay scale. This post is a substantive post. The appointment will be a full‑time (10 PA) Consultant / Senior Specialist doctor in Sexual Health, Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust with office accommodation provided at axess Macclesfield (Macclesfield District General Hospital site) and axess Crewe (Eagle Bridge Health and Wellbeing Centre).

The Consultant / Senior Specialist Doctor will deliver appointment clinics in integrated sexual health and HIV medicine, including one evening clinic per week. Consultant clinics will consist of booked appointments for referrals from other members of the clinical team, GP’s and directly booked patient appointments. Due to the more complex nature of the consultant clinics, appointments are scheduled for 30 minutes. A four‑hour clinic will consist of 7 appointments plus a 30‑minute clinical administration period. The post holder will be fully independent in outpatient HIV clinical care (with support of the wider regional MDT for complex cases). There is no direct inpatient responsibility with this post. Attendance at the HIV MDT with local consultant colleagues is encouraged to discuss inpatients currently managed by the Infectious Diseases team (virtually by video conference).

  • Ability to motivate and inspire a multi‑disciplinary team and work sensitively within teams
  • Significant sexual health clinical experience at senior clinician level, management of sexually transmitted infections
  • Contraception, Sexual and reproductive Health
  • Understanding of the importance of the clinician role in management
  • Significant HIV (outpatient) clinical experience
  • Basic Medical Qualification registrable in the UK
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist register for GU Medicine via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), CESR or European Community rights
    UK professional registration is required
  • Diploma in HIV Medicine
  • Diploma in GU Medicine
  • Research/publications in sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS / contraceptive / reproductive health and other aspects of sexual health
  • Teaching qualification appropriate to sexual health (e.g., faculty registered trainer, STIF trainer)
  • Appropriate higher degree (e.g., MSc, MD / PhD)
  • Letters of competence in IUD/IUS, sub‑dermal implants, MFSRH
  • Desirable
  • Clinical experience in other aspects of women's sexual health (e.g., vulval disease, psychosexual counselling)
  • Knowledge and principles of resource and budget management
  • Awareness of core values of NHS in its modern structure
  • Teaching qualifications (e.g., STIF trainer, faculty registered trainer)
  • Letters of competence in IUD/IUS, sub‑dermal implants, MFSRH
