Job Title: Consultant Psychiatrist & Medical Director

Service & location: Cygnet Aspen Clinic and Aspen House

Professionally Accountable to: Regional Medical Director

Managerially Responsible to: Hospital Manager

We are seeking an experienced part-time (4 days per week) psychiatrist who will work at Cygnet Aspen Clinic and Aspen House, providing senior medical cover within our specialist mental health services for women.

Cygnet Aspen Clinic is a specialist service for women with personality disorder and complex needs. We provide assessment, stabilization, treatment, and rehabilitation for up to 16 women.

Cygnet Aspen House is a 20-bed service specializing in high-support inpatient rehabilitation (level 2) for women with severe and enduring mental illness.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician, overseeing and maintaining the care of all ward inpatients as required, and will also be responsible for auditing the medical services to ensure quality in accordance with GMC standards and other professional guidelines.

In addition to being the Responsible Clinician at [insert ward name], you will serve as the Medical Director at [insert service and number of beds].

This is a part-time position with 0.2 WTE as Medical Director and 0.6 WTE as Consultant Psychiatrist.

Main duties and Responsibilities

As a Medical Director, you will:

  • Ensure optimal clinical outcomes for our patients
  • Lead all aspects of clinical practice and exemplify operational excellence
  • Provide leadership for medical staff, monitoring performance and professional issues
  • Supervise all consultants, ensuring they supervise SDs and ASs
  • Provide expert support within the service and to the wider team
  • Ensure quality and compliance with standards and regulations
  • Work with colleagues to deliver integrated, whole-person care
  • Coach, mentor, and train colleagues
  • Maintain regular communication and meetings with medical staff
  • Assist in recruitment and retention of medical staff
  • Involve medical staff in hospital clinical governance
  • Collaborate with hospital managers to implement CQC outcomes
  • Chair medical advisory committee meetings and attend Medical Directors meetings
  • Liaise with Responsible Officer and Regional Medical Director regarding fitness to practice issues

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, you will:

  • Lead high-quality care for patients at Cygnet Aspen Clinic and Aspen House
  • Act as a positive role model and maintain a professional attitude
  • Take responsibility for patient treatment plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team
  • Assess referrals and conduct mental state examinations
  • Perform investigations, diagnosis, and treatment
  • Conduct ward rounds, patient reviews, and clinical audits
  • Lead risk assessments, risk management, and clinical governance
  • Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals and attend hearings
  • Liaise with the Ministry of Justice regarding patient transfers and leave
  • Maintain accurate patient records
  • Communicate regularly with the Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager
