Job description

Consultant Physician in Nephrology & Medicine

We are assisting a prestigious NHS Trust in the UK to recruit a Consultant Physician in Nephrology & Medicine on either a Substantive or NHS Fixed Term basis for 12 months to join their successful Medicine department.

Their Stone and Kidney Centre (SKC), opened in October 2013, provides dedicated multi-disciplinary care for patients with Urological and Renal diseases. The centre includes Redwood Ward, a 15-bed ward with 2 haemodialysis spaces, a lithotripsy machine, and separate procedure rooms for Urology and Nephrology. The renal team offers acute haemodialysis for patients with stage 3 acute kidney injury, step-down patients from ITU, and repatriations from the regional renal unit at KCH. Maintenance dialysis is also provided for existing haemodialysis patients who are acutely unwell.

The team comprises consultants, an F1, a SHO level doctor, and a Trust Specialty registrar, supported by Clinical Nurse Specialists covering anaemia, CKD, and low clearance work. The nephrology consultants share responsibilities for providing 24/7 inpatient care to a 10-bed Level 1.5 HDU in Laurel Ward, as well as inpatient general medical care for up to 8 patients on Juniper Ward.

The nephrology team participates in the acute medical rota (on-call 1:16) and provides care for non-elective patients, many over 75 years old. The hospital operates a needs-based policy, with initial triage in the CDU or Emergency Department, followed by allocation to appropriate wards. The on-call rotation is shared, and daytime consultants focus solely on acute medical care during on-call duties. Post-take ward rounds are typically twice daily, supported by a Hospital at Night team and ward-based junior doctors and registrars.

Located in a beautiful suburb on the outskirts of London, the area offers excellent access to international airports, reputable schools, and a friendly, well-supported team environment.
