A leading healthcare provider in London is seeking a full-time consultant in paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes. The role includes outpatient clinics, inpatient management, and a commitment to teaching. The ideal candidate will have essential qualifications including an MBBS and MRCPCH, with significant experience in paediatric diabetes and endocrinology. Substantive, full-time (10PA) post in paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes based at St. George's University Hospital. The postholder will share duties involved in running a busy paediatric endocrine and diabetes service which receives tertiary, secondary and primary care referrals.
The successful applicant will work with the present team and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. The department is a major teaching hospital with a wide range of acute general and specialist tertiary services, recently rated outstanding by the CQC. Outpatient clinics
The postholder will undertake diabetes and endocrine outpatient clinics every week, including a mix of new referrals and follow-up patients. Cross-coverage with Dr Rice as required to ensure capacity for 3 monthly appointments in the MDT paediatric diabetes clinic and other service needs as required by the Best Practice Tariff for paediatric diabetes.
Inpatient activity
With Dr Rice, support the management of children undergoing treatment or endocrine tests as day cases in Jungle Day Ward and work closely with 2 clinical nurse specialists. Ward reviews are expected for diabetes inpatients and endocrine/diabetes queries from PICU, NICU, general paediatrics and other specialties.
Out of hours work and on call
Work with the diabetes team to provide out-of-hours advice/support to meet the Best Practice Tariff on a 1:5 basis (0.25 DCC). Participate in the non-resident out-of-hours on-call rota on a 1:2 basis for paediatric diabetes and 1:3 for paediatric endocrinology, with category B on-call payments.
Teaching and Training
Take a lead in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Supervise and manage junior medical staff, contribute to examinations and accreditation duties, and participate in postgraduate education. Contribute to the monthly Paediatric Endocrine Specialty registrar teaching and supervise projects; provide educational and clinical supervision of paediatric registrars and mentoring for those pursuing the RCPCH special study module in diabetes.
Continuing Medical Education, Research and Audit
The centre provides a supportive environment for clinical research and audit. The endocrinology & diabetes service participates in national and international multi-centre studies including growth disorders, type 1 diabetes (including ADDRESS-2 and Trialnet) and Type 2 diabetes. The appointee will participate in medical audit and CME, and may pursue research in service delivery with access to facilities provided by the medical school. An honorary Senior Lectureship may be offered in recognition of teaching and research.
Management
Collaborate with local managers and consultant colleagues on clinical governance, policies, standing orders, and financial instructions. Ensure adequate arrangements for hospital staff availability and safety policies are observed.
