Job summary

A regional health authority is seeking a Consultant in Spinal Surgery for a full-time role at University Hospital of Wales. This position involves participating in on-call duties, supporting a surgical team, and contributing to research and teaching. The ideal candidate must be on the GMC Specialist Register and have experience in managing complex spinal cases. The salary ranges from £110,240 to £160,951 per annum. Qualifications

Job description
Job Summary

Consultant in Spinal Surgery for Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, University Hospital of Wales, Heath Park, Cardiff. Part of the Spines Surgical Team within the Major Trauma Centre. The role expands to cope with increasing demand in degenerative adult spinal pathology and major trauma.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in a 1 in 6 week on-call rota covering all Spinal Surgery emergencies and referrals. No elective work during this week.
  • Occupy an integral position within the Spinal Surgical Team and support two spinal fellows 0800‑2000 weekdays, one spinal fellow 0800‑2000 weekends and the Orthopaedic Registrar overnight.
  • Leverage advanced experience in Spinal Surgery and contribute to teaching and research.
Qualifications Essential
  • On GMC Specialist Register for specialty / Specialty Registrar with CCT due within 6 months of interview date.
  • Recognised advanced fellowship in Spinal Surgery.
  • ATLS or APLS provider status.
  • Broad training and experience in Spinal Surgery.
  • Demonstrable experience in operative management of complex spine trauma, adult degenerative spinal surgery (cervical and lumbar), metastatic spinal cord compression, spinal infections and cauda equina syndrome.
  • Completion of recognised Spinal Surgery fellowship.
Qualifications Desirable
  • Relevant higher degree e.g. MD, PhD, MSc in Trauma.
  • Evidence of independent practice.
  • Experience of Major Trauma Centre working.
  • Evidence of effective team and multidisciplinary working.
  • Effective and demonstrable communication skills.
  • Evidence of CPD.
  • Evidence of active research interests.
  • Interest in education and training of resident doctors and medical students.
  • Evidence of effective leadership skills.
Salary

£110,240 to £160,951 per annum.
