Job description
Overview

Exciting opportunity for a motivated Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Primrose Ward team at Western Community Hospital. This full-time, flexible role supports hybrid working (face-to-face and remote) and welcomes joint applications from part-time consultants. The post is based at Oakwood Centre, Western Community Hospital, and follows a strict OPMH on-call rota for North and South Hampshire (approximately 1 in 14).

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Dr. Joseph Jameson, a full-time consultant in old age psychiatry covering Snowdrop Ward in Winchester, providing a buddy system for cross-cover during annual and study leave. The medical team includes an ST4-6 trainee and three resident trainees (two FY1 doctors and one GP trainee). There is weekly input from a consultant geriatrician to support physical health management and supervise residents.

Primrose Ward is a fully staffed, functional OPMH unit with a new ward manager, supported by a modern matron and head of nursing, a Band 7 advanced nurse practitioner, a stable psychology team, and therapy services with physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

Responsibilities

The postholder will be responsible for delivering high-quality clinical care, holding Responsible Clinician (RC) duties, and managing treatment for patients on Primrose Ward. They will provide clinical supervision and support for resident doctors, including one ST4-6 senior trainee, two Foundation Year 1 residents, and a GP trainee (CT1-3 level). They will work as a core member of the Old Age Psychiatry inpatient team, collaborating with the ward\'s multidisciplinary team and leading inpatient care initiatives. The role includes participating in service development and quality improvement, and coordinating with the inpatient psychology team and allied health professionals.

Cross-cover arrangements are in place with Dr. Joseph Jameson for Snowdrop Ward during annual and study leave, and the postholder will have access to dedicated administrative support for tribunal report writing. They will work with the ward leadership including a Modern Matron, Ward Manager, and Head of Nursing for inpatient services.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full Registration with the General Medical Council
  • MRCPsych or recognised equivalent
  • Eligible for inclusion in the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview
  • CCT in Old Age Psychiatry and/or CCT in General Adult Psychiatry
  • Approved under section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983
