Job Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us as a Consultant Neonatologist in the Neonatal Intensive Care Service at University Hospitals Southampton (UHS). This is a substantive 8PA post with the potential to become full time in the future.

Role Overview

The post is based in the 43‑bed NICU at Princess Anne Hospital, part of the Wessex Neonatal Operational Delivery Network. Responsibilities cover clinical care of medical and surgical neonates, as well as network‑wide transport within Wessex. The weekday team comprises 11 full‑time neonatologists and the service provides tertiary care, including cardiology, surgery and complex care.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver clinical excellence in neonatal care.
  • Be motivated, adaptable and committed to improving patient care within the NHS.
  • Work effectively in a constantly changing environment and remain calm under pressure.
  • Develop additional skills or interests that complement the neonatal team, e.g. infant feeding, the Breastfeeding Initiative, perinatal care, antenatal counselling, perinatal/palliative care, family‑integrated care, transition to paediatric services, and point‑of‑care ultrasound including echocardiography.
Qualifications
  • CCT in Neonates or equivalent experience as defined by the Neonatal CSAC (36 months level 3 neonatology or 24 months level 3 neonatology with 12 months allied specialities at ST6‑8), or experience as a consultant in a level 3 neonatal unit.
  • Registered on the GMC Specialist Register.
  • Trainees within six months of obtaining their neonatal CCT on the application date may also apply.
Research and Education

The department is research‑active, led by senior academics with links to the Southampton NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and the MRC. Candidates will support ongoing research and participate in NIHR portfolio studies, with opportunities for personal development, research and teaching.

Location

Princess Anne Hospital, Southampton – situated on the south coast with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and the Jurassic coast are nearby.
