Consultant in Haematology

The post will be based in Blackpool with a 1 in 5 on‑call rota to achieve a real work‑life balance

Come and be a part of our regional level 3 unit, performing autologous stem cell transplants and treating complex Myeloma, Acute leukaemia and Lymphoma patients

Develop a subspeciality interest in Myeloma, and become involved in teaching, training & research

The successful applicants can expect:

  • 10 PA basic contract with 1 further PA for on‑call, with further PAs according to job‑planning

We are looking to appoint a substantive consultant to complete our complement of a team of 5 consultants. You will be encouraged to develop subspeciality interest in Myeloma, whilst being supported by a team of experienced colleagues.

We currently have 5 specialty Trainees, along with 2 specialty doctors in Blackpool. There is also a team of clinical scientists and nurse practitioners.

AAC Interview will take place on Monday 6th January 2026.

Main duties of the job

The role will be on our JACIE accredited regional unit that treats acute leukaemia, relapsed/refractory lymphoma patients, Burkitt's lymphoma and undertakes autologous stem cell transplants. We believe in treating as many patients as possible at home through our ambulatory chemotherapy unit, with plans to develop on‑site patient accommodation to this. We have a strong track record in research and we are high recruiters to many national trials. Teaching is also our passion and involvement in teaching our specialist registrars and junior doctors, as well as medical students via our growing links with the new UCLAN Medical School, is very much encouraged.

You may be a trainee about to complete specialist training. We understand the challenges that stepping up to the first consultant job brings, and you will be fully supported in that transition. Equally well, you may be an experienced haematologist looking for that new challenge in the next phase of your working life.

Professional Qualifications
  • Primary medical qualification
  • Full and Specialist registration with the General Medical Council and hold license to practise, or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • FRCPath or equivalent.
  • If an applicant is UK trained, they must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview
  • If an applicant is non‑UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
Training
  • SpR or equivalent training in Haematology.
  • Evidence of appropriate CPD
  • Full log book summary
Experience
  • Broad exposure to all aspects of clinical and laboratory haematology including recent experience in the management of acute leukaemia.
  • Specialist interest in an area of haematology
  • Ability to supervise audit projects
  • Understanding of principles of research and audit.
  • Regular attendance at audit meetings
  • Evidence of recent research activity and publications
