Overview

A Vacancy at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust. We are seeking a dynamic and committed Consultant Breast Radiologist to take on a combined role that includes clinical breast imaging and leadership as Director of Breast Screening within our NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP).

Role and Responsibilities

This is a fantastic opportunity to shape and lead breast imaging services across North Lancashire and South Cumbria while enjoying an excellent work-life balance in one of the UK’s most beautiful and affordable regions. Role highlights: We are seeking a Consultant Breast Radiologist with the opportunity to take on the leadership role of Director of Breast Screening. You will oversee the quality and delivery of the local NHS Breast Screening Programme, working closely with public health, service managers, and clinical teams.

The role includes both symptomatic and screening breast imaging, including mammography, ultrasound, MRI, and image-guided procedures. You’ll be part of a supportive multidisciplinary team with experienced radiographers, advanced practitioners, and admin staff. On-call is optional and mostly outsourced overnight, promoting sustainable working patterns.

Service Overview

The Breast Imaging Unit operates across Furness General Hospital, Royal Lancaster Infirmary, and Westmorland General Hospital, alongside mobile screening units. Recent investment has enhanced our digital mammography, ultrasound systems, and SECTRA PACS. The screening programme is high performing with excellent uptake and patient feedback.

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
