Info about what the Configuration and Design Engineer role entails

As part of the Manufacturing Engineering / Operations function, you will play a key role in supporting product validation and production through the design and development of test equipment, fixtures and tooling. You will also take ownership of configuration management and engineering change control activities, working cross‑functionally to ensure robust documentation, traceability and smooth implementation of design changes across the organisation.

This role combines hands‑on mechanical design with structured change management in a fast‑moving, technology‑driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop and implement test equipment, fixtures and jigs to support product validation and production testing, while creating detailed CAD models and engineering drawings for fixtures, tooling and assemblies. Conduct feasibility studies and develop design solutions that consider cost, performance, safety, reliability and delivery timescales. Manage configuration control activities, including engineering documentation, bills of materials and revision control, and coordinate engineering change control to ensure accurate and timely implementation across production and the supply chain. Work closely with design, manufacturing, quality and test teams to assess the impact of changes and ensure full compliance. Validate mechanical designs through hand calculations and / or finite element analysis, and liaise with suppliers on design manufacture, tooling, cost, quality and availability. Ensure all designs meet relevant safety, ergonomic, reliability and industry standards, while preparing and maintaining technical documentation, design specifications and test procedures. Provide technical support and engineering expertise to other departments as required.

Essential Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Electromechanical or a related engineering discipline.
  • Proven mechanical design experience, including the use of CAD tools and development of fixtures or tooling.
  • Experience working within structured engineering environments with formal change control and configuration management.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and how design decisions impact production and supply chain.
  • Ability to manage technical documentation, revisions and configuration data with a high level of accuracy.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
Desirable Requirements
  • Experience in automotive, aerospace or other regulated, safety‑critical industries.
  • Familiarity with PLM, MRP or ERP systems.
  • Experience producing drawings to recognised standards with application of GD&T.
  • Knowledge or hands‑on experience using FEA / CFD tools.
  • OEM or Tier 1 experience within vehicle systems, assemblies or validation environments.
  • Experience designing fixtures for prototype, low‑volume or high‑volume production.
Benefits
  • Competitive salary package
  • Hybrid working options
  • Generous pension scheme
  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays
  • Enhanced family leave policies
  • Cycle to work scheme
