Senior Communications Manager – FCDO Research Commissioning Centre (RCC)

Background: The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) Research Commissioning Centre (RCC), co‑led by the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie) and the University of Birmingham, commissions and manages research to enhance development and foreign policy impact. This fixed‑term position (June 2023 – June 2028) is based at 3ie and involves close collaboration with FCDO, University of Birmingham and the RCC consortium.

Key responsibilities
  • Oversee and develop the GRTD website strategy, branding and content.
  • Collaborate with FCDO to create engagement campaigns for GRTD and manage external contractors.
  • Support rollout and visibility of the GRTD brand and maintain editorial standards.
  • Disseminate impact stories, research outputs and optimise digital engagement KPIs.
  • Ensure RCC presence on GRTD: produce, edit and post website content and coordinate with 3ie Strategic Communications Office.
  • Lead the RCC communication and engagement strategy, create new communication products and manage events.
  • Provide project‑management oversight of RCC publications and communications products.
  • Support grantees with dissemination guidance and review their engagement plans.
  • Collect impact stories for learning and reporting.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Master’s degree in journalism, public affairs, marketing or a related field; experience in international development communication is an advantage.
  • At least 7‑10 years of communication experience in a development sector.
  • Proven ability to plan and implement communication and engagement strategies for organisations and research projects.
  • Knowledge of graphic design, content management, social media and event management tools (e.g., InDesign, Photoshop, Mailchimp, Canva, Drupal).
  • Project‑management and coordination skills ensuring on‑time delivery.
  • Excellent English writing and editing; cross‑platform writing experience desirable.
  • Self‑motivated, creative, multi‑tasker with ability to work under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; willing to work in a matrix‑organised team environment.
  • Experience working with UK government departments is desirable.
