Overview

Job Title: Communication Support Worker

Salary: £25,000 - £27,000 per annum (pro-rated)

Hours: 37 hours per week

Contract: Permanent, Term Time Only

Location: Cambridge and Huntingdon

We are seeking a Communication Support Worker (CSW) to support d/Deaf and hearing-impaired learners across a range of educational settings. This is a rewarding role focused on enabling equal access to learning through effective communication support.

The Role

The Communication Support Worker will be working under the guidance of the Head of Learning Support. You will facilitate communication between d/Deaf learners, staff, and peers, ensuring learners can fully access teaching, learning, and assessment.

Key responsibilities
  • Supporting d/Deaf learners in class using appropriate communication methods (e.g. BSL/SSE, note-taking, lip speaking, language modification).
  • Liaising with teaching staff to adapt learning environments, materials, and delivery.
  • Advising staff on effective communication strategies.
  • Supporting learners during exams and assessments in line with awarding body guidelines.
  • Preparing and adapting learning materials, including video transcription.
  • Supporting learners during trips, visits, and other off-site activities.
  • Promoting equality, inclusion, and positive attitudes within the organisation.
  • Committing to ongoing professional development and Deaf awareness.
About You

Essential requirements:

  • Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language.
  • GCSE (or Level 2) English and Maths.
  • Experience supporting d/Deaf learners in an educational setting.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and awareness of reasonable adjustments.

Desirable:

  • Level 3 Certificate in Communication Support for Deaf Learners.
  • Level 1 Award in Deaf Awareness and Communication.
  • Level 3 Award in Modifying Written English Texts for Deaf People.
  • Membership of a professional body such as BATOD.

You will be flexible, reliable, and enthusiastic, with the ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and off-site. Access to your own transport is required.
