Job Summary

This post would suit individuals who aim to pursue a career in Surgery with a specialist interest in Medical Education, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The successful candidate will coordinate and deliver the Trust's undergraduate clinical teaching programme, comprising five sessions per week on average, and undertake five sessions of clinical duties and professional development.

Educational Duties

The main educational duties include delivering structured clinical teaching sessions – bedside teaching, seminars, teaching clinics – and running formative exams such as OSCEs and single best answer (SBA) for Year 3 Medical Students, as well as teaching and OSCEs for Year 5 Medical Students. The role also involves three Saturdays per year for student assessments, with time off in lieu.

Clinical Duties

The main clinical duties support the busy departments within the Division of Surgery. Specialist clinics and skills training can be arranged according to career interest. There are no on‑call commitments; locum opportunities are available only if they do not impact the educational service delivery. Supervision is provided by the Director of Clinical Studies and the Clinical Supervisor.

Job Description

Applications are invited from registered Medical Practitioners for the post based within the Department of Medical & Dental Education and the Division of Emergency & Medicine. The Trust provides undergraduate medical and surgical clinical teaching to students from the University of Leicester School of Medicine and the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, from year 3 ward‑based apprenticeships to year 5 clinical assistantships, including year 4 specialty blocks. The post holder is expected to spend approximately five sessions per week teaching undergraduate medical students from Leicester Medical School, participate in student induction and assessment sessions, and take annual leave when students are not on placement to the Trust. If leave is taken during a student placement block, a prospective cover must be agreed by the Medical Education Department.
