Overview

The Imperial Memory Unit (IMU) has been running clinical trials for over ten years, focusing on disease modifying treatment trials in early Alzheimer's disease but also including observations studies and trials of advanced diagnostics.

Responsibilities
  • The Clinical Research Nurse post holder will be responsible for coordinating clinical trials relating to dementia and preparing/delivering clinical trial medication. The Alzheimer's Clinical Trials medications at IMU are predominantly delivered by intravenous infusions; therefore, it is a requirement that the post holder is IV competent. The post holder will act as a blinded nurse and un-blinded nurse for specific studies taking place at the Imperial Memory Research Unit.
  • Other responsibilities include helping in the recruitment of patients, coordination of patients participating in clinical research, collection of research data and carrying out clinical observations relevant to the study protocol.
  • It is desirable that the post holder has experience in using clinical rating scales in Alzheimer's disease (e.g. MMSE, CDR, ADAS-Cog) or are willing to be trained on neuropsychological assessments.
  • The majority of time will be spent in a hospital research clinic setting. The post holder will facilitate high standards of nursing care and work closely with the other departments in the hospital such as pharmacy, Imaging and other research teams.
Management and Organisation
  • Is accountable for the timely and accurate documentation of trial data according to ICH Good Clinical Practice and EU directive on clinical trials.
  • Functions within a collaborative practice role with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to provide expertise in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of clinical research protocols.
  • Demonstrates autonomy as well as the ability to collaborate within the MDT.
  • Required to use own initiative, take responsibility for decision-making and prioritise own workload within a team and individual context.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of databases as appropriate.
  • Establishes and maintains links with GP surgeries, other hospitals, healthcare professionals and other agencies involved in the management of clinical research.
  • Responsible for selection and maintaining clinical supplies.
Leadership
  • Acts as mentor to new members of staff.
  • Provides cross cover for other members of the research team.
  • Manages a portfolio of research projects on a day to day basis.
Clinical Responsibilities
  • Co-ordinates and monitors the care of patients participating in clinical research in the Trust as follows:
  • Identifies potential patients for clinical research.
