Job description

The respiratory physiology service has an opportunity to appoint a motivated, enthusiastic individual to the role of Senior Clinical Physiologist for a fixed‑term maternity cover post. This is a hybrid role, working between the lung function labs and the integrated care service, where you will support the community respiratory clinics. We are a busy, friendly, multidisciplinary team including physiologists, clinical scientists, administrators and consultants. In lung function the post‑holder will perform a range of standard and complex lung function tests. As part of the cross‑site rota, there will be the opportunity to work in the Sleep Centre at Charing Cross Hospital to develop, or maintain skills in respiratory polygraphy analysis and CPAP compliance clinics. We also host PTP and STP students, so there is the opportunity to be involved in teaching. In the integrated care role you will support the community teams with ARTP accreditation and portfolios. The postholder will be required to proactively contribute to the wider development of the service, coordinating delivery of the community spirometry clinics and developing the diagnostic hubs.

Responsibilities
  • Perform the procedures listed unsupervised, gaining accurate and clinically valuable measurements.
    • Measurement of dynamic lung volumes by spirometry and flow‑volume loops.
    • Measurement of static lung volumes by helium dilution.
    • Transfer factor for carbon monoxide by single‑breath method.
    • Assessment of bronchodilator response, with short‑ and long‑acting drugs.
    • Measurement of exercise limitation by 6‑minute walk test with oximetry and BORG evaluation.
    • Training and assessment of inhaler techniques.
  • May be required to perform the procedures below under supervision until competence is achieved.
    • Assessment of hypoxic challenge (fitness to fly).
    • Assessment of bronchial challenge using nebulised methacholine.
    • Blood gas analysis.
    • Follow‑up patients on CPAP/NIV therapy, troubleshoot problems and alter treatment if required.
    • NIV support, specialist advice in liaison with lead NIV consultant and nursing staff.
    • Assist with practical training in NIV, specifically BiPAP machine set‑up and mask fit aimed at nurses and senior house officers.
  • Provide sound clinical leadership and develop support mechanisms for sharing good practice within the clinical setting, Trust‑wide and externally.
  • Comply with Trust policies and procedures within the multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Assist in identifying areas of service development in conjunction with the service manager.
Qualifications & Experience

It is essential for the successful applicant to have had previous experience in lung function testing, with a good science background and a BSc in Healthcare Science (respiratory major) or equivalent. Desirable to have obtained the ARTP practitioner examination and to be working towards AHCS equivalence.
