Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for both full time and part time Band 7 Clinical Nurse / AHP Specialists to join the Neurology team at Worcester Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. We welcome applicants from Nursing / Physio / Paramedic / Pharmacy backgrounds.

The post holder will work within a multi-disciplinary team who lead on a variety of Neurological conditions such as MS, Parkinson’s, Headache, Neurovascular, Neuromuscular, FND and Epilepsy.

We are seeking applicants who want to pursue an interest in their chosen Neurological field.

The post holder will undertake outpatient clinics across Worcestershire as well as support development for inpatients.

V300 prescribing and health assessment is essential for this role and will be supported by our consultant team and ACPs.

Main duties of the job
  • To provide a service working within the Clinical Nurse Specialist nursing team within the speciality of Neurology, manage a caseload and act as a link with the Worcestershire Community Trust, particularly the Community Neurology Team, to ensure timely and appropriate transfer of care in a managed way.
  • To ensure cohesive working between Acute and Community Neurology Services.
  • To contribute to the organisation of Neurology multidisciplinary, patient‑centred care.
  • To facilitate flow of patients both from A&E and through the Neurology unit in accordance with NICE guidelines.
  • To provide expert relevant clinical advice and support to patients and their carers.
  • To support the development and implementation of best practice within the speciality of neurology medicine.
  • To provide a specialist nursing role in the assessment and management of patients who have suffered a neurology (in‑and‑out) condition.
  • To provide an outreach service to other patients in the Hospital who have a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of neurology, ensuring that their management is timely and appropriate.
  • To provide key support and an educational resource for any qualified and unqualified nursing staff, allied health professionals, junior doctors and students working within the speciality.
  • To develop nurse‑led Outpatient services and manage a caseload.
  • To play a key role in ensuring that national and local targets for neurology are met.
Experience – Essential
  • Recent and relevant experience in Stroke or Neuro care.
  • Working within a multidisciplinary team and multi‑agencies to provide specialised nursing services.
  • Experience and training of staff.
  • Evidence of advanced clinical assessment/decision making and care delivery skills.
  • Ability to assess and interpret complex needs of patients and to make decisions on investigation ordering and correct referral pathway.
  • IT literate in use of Word, email, Excel.
  • Ability to communicate complex, sensitive or contentious information including condition‑related information concerning patients.
  • Be confident and competent in providing specialist advice concerning the care or treatment of the speciality group of patients.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of MDT and autonomously.
  • Evidence of being up‑to‑date with current issues and research in neurology.
  • Demonstrates strong clinical, professional and leadership skills.
  • Experience of completing audits and managing change in relation to the results.
  • Will undertake research and development within the role with some clinical trials.
  • Frequent requirement for moderate physical effort for several long periods during a shift.
Experience – Desirable
  • Involvement in clinical audit and research.
  • Evidence of advanced clinical assessment or decision making and delivery skills.
  • Experience of autonomous working in clinic.
  • Experience in teaching.
Personal Qualities – Essential
  • Flexible to meet needs of post.
  • Dexterity and accuracy are required to be able to administer and draw up medications.
Qualifications – Essential
  • First level registration.
  • Level 6 Degree in adult Nursing.
  • Health Assessment qualification.
  • Nurse prescriber qualification.
  • Neurology training/ modules at level 6 or 7.
Qualifications – Desirable
  • Teaching qualification or willingness to work towards.
  • MSc degree or willingness to study at this level.
