Overview

Job summary: Applications are welcomed for a 12 month SABR clinical fellow post commencing December 2025 in Clinical Oncology, based at The Christie NHS FT, Manchester, UK Europe's largest single site cancer hospital.

Responsibilities
  • 40 hours per week as a Clinical Fellow for the development and implementation of Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR) within the organisation for a fixed term period of 12 months with the option to extend for up to a further 12 months. The post holder will be employed by The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and will be based at The Christie.
  • Work alongside consultants and trainees in outpatient clinics, supervising Technical Radiotherapy delivery and performing on-treatment reviews and follow-up assessments.
  • Involved in all aspects of the management of patients with HBT and oligometastatic disease, including screening referrals, active participation in MDT, assessment of patients, consent, pre-treatment review, treatment, SABR planning, SABR plan review/approval, technical radiotherapy development, post-treatment care and ePROMS, under supervision of the designated SABR team consultant.
  • Teach junior medical staff, medical students and nurses on occasion.
  • Take part in audit and research.
  • There is no on‑call responsibility with this post.

Job responsibilities

The successful applicant would work alongside consultants and trainees in outpatient clinics across a number of disease groups, supervising Technical Radiotherapy delivery and performing on-treatment reviews and follow-up assessments. The appointee will be a Fellow in the Department of Clinical Oncology; the employing authority is The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. The post-holder will be accountable to the Clinical Director of the Directorate of Clinical Oncology and professionally responsible to the consultants in whose clinics they will be supporting. A clinical supervisor (Consultant Clinical Oncologist) will be assigned and the appointee will work alongside the supervisor in at least one clinic. The role will develop expertise in the development, management and treatment of HPB and oligometastatic tumour sites with SABR. The Clinical Oncology establishment consists of 59 Consultants, plus a team of 24 SpRs and Academic/Clinical Fellows. All activities will be conducted under the supervision of the SABR team consultant.

Qualifications and experience

Attainments (Essential):

  • MB BCh or equivalent; full FRCR (UK)

  • MRCP (UK)
  • Evidence of enthusiasm and participation in research

Experience (Essential):

  • At least three years post full registration in General Medicine; completed a minimum of 3 years Clinical Oncology training
  • Understands principles of audit; ability and willingness to work in multidisciplinary teams

Experience (Desirable):

  • Previous SABR experience
  • Evidence of participation in audit
  • Skills in time/resource management

Teaching (Desirable):

  • Evidence of teaching and involvement in the education of medical students/junior doctors

  • Awareness of development needs and desire to achieve this through evidenced-based appraisal
