Job Summary

The clinical fellowship in proton therapy is a one‑year programme that allows the fellow to gain experience in both clinical practice and research. The post is 80 % clinical and 20 % research/CPD. Suitable trainees should have completed their FRCR examinations or equivalent and be senior specialty trainees in Clinical Oncology. Overseas applications are welcome.

The fellow will undertake four monthly rotations in disease sites: paediatrics, head and neck, CNS and skull base, sarcoma, lymphoma, oesophageal and HPB, lung, and breast. Rotation details can be discussed and tailored to the learning needs of the appointed fellow.

Fellows will have opportunities to lead and actively participate in research projects, and management and leadership skill development opportunities will be available during the fellowship.

Responsibilities

During the 12‑month fellowship you will develop competence in Proton Beam Therapy (PBT) across multiple tumour subsites, including head & neck, CNS, paediatrics, sarcoma, thoracic, lymphoma, breast, and upper GIT, as well as complex and rare tumours. Your duties will include:

  • Patient selection, tumour delineation, treatment planning and delivery for PBT, and experience with paediatric conventional radiation therapy.
  • Support ongoing multi‑centre clinical trials and evaluative commissioning projects, investigating the role of proton therapy.
  • Dedicated research time, allowing you to shape projects to your professional goals, receive support to publish findings, and present at national and international conferences.
  • Collaboration with the NHS Proton Registry, contributing to national data validation projects and leading your own research initiatives.
  • Administrative tasks related to patient care, National PBT Registry, and service development.
  • Outpatient care, volume delineation, planning, radiotherapy QA, and participation in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Provide senior RT care if PBT treatment extends beyond 9 am‑5 pm, possibly including weekend or bank holiday shifts. Shifts are distributed on rota and may be paid as locum or compensated as days in lieu.
Qualifications & Person Specification

Essential Attainments

  • MBBCh or equivalent.
  • FRCR (clinical oncology) or equivalent in clinical/radiation oncology.
  • GMC registration (or eligibility).
  • IELTS/OET or equivalent (consult GMG for criteria).
  • Research experience.

Essential Training & Experience

  • Experience of ≥ 3 years in radiotherapy.
  • Experience in advanced radiation approaches (IMRT/VMAT).
  • Understanding of audit principles.

Desirable Attainments

  • Postgraduate qualifications in medicine.
  • MRCP or equivalent.
  • Other oncology/radiotherapy related professional qualifications or registration.
  • Previous experience in PBT.
  • Relevant management experience in oncology.
  • Attendance of proton beam therapy courses/training.
  • Publications in scientific journals.
  • Previous involvement in development and implementation of clinical trials.
