Job description
Position Overview

A Vacancy at University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust. We have a vacancy for Trust grade doctors in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care to support the continuing expansion of service. This is an ideal opportunity for an anaesthetist with 3 or more years’ experience to consolidate their expertise with an on‑going commitment to career development and education.

The successful applicant will provide critical care cover and anaesthetic theatre work both in and out of normal working hours, with onsite and distant supervision by a Consultant Anaesthetist/Intensivist. This cover will include the newly established enhanced perioperative care unit to be established in 2026.

Our department has received Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation (ACSA) from the Royal College of Anaesthetists after an extensive peer review, recognising our commitment to quality and patient care.

We offer an enviable work‑life balance with miles of sandy beaches and a large natural harbour on our doorstep, as well as easy access to the Purbecks, New Forest and the beautiful Dorset countryside.

Resident cover will include the Critical Unit, Obstetric unit and Enhanced Perioperative Unit during office hours; additional shifts of cover with non‑resident supervision by a Consultant Intensivist or Anaesthetist out of hours. The role also involves providing anaesthesia during daytime hours for the surgical and interventional specialties within the Trust, with indirect (onsite) supervision from Consultants.

Responsibilities
  • Undertake advanced clinical assessment of the patient to diagnose medical/surgical conditions and initiate treatment.
  • Work autonomously in recognised situations, including operating theatres and obstetrics.
  • Where appropriate, provide anaesthetic services under distant supervision.
  • Utilise professional judgement in managing complex and unpredictable care events.
  • Develop and maintain effective communication with the patient, relatives and MDT where required.
  • Use advanced communication skills to impart sensitive, complex and potentially distressing information to patients and carers.
  • Provide accurate and effective clinical handovers across all professional boundaries.
  • Make and receive patient referrals to/from other medical specialties.
  • Solo transfers of patients both intra and inter hospital where applicable.
  • Document in medical notes, history, clinical findings, physical examination, interpretation and plan of care.
  • Undertake daily reviews of critical care patients and formulate and discuss plans on Consultant ward rounds.
  • Actively support the discharge planning process of patients.
  • Recognise own limitations and effectively seek appropriate help.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient.
