Job description

THE EMPLOYER IS: WINDSOR WOMEN'S CENTREThe Caretaker/Gardener is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean and welcoming environment at Windsor Women’s Centre. Duties include carrying out general caretaking tasks, minor repairs and maintenance, ensuring the security of the building, and keeping internal and external areas clean and well presented. The role includes maintaining gardens and outdoor spaces, carrying out routine gardening tasks, and supporting the smooth running of the Centre by setting up rooms and responding to day-to-day maintenance needs as they arise.This role will be subject to an enhanced Access NI Disclosure check as it involves working closely alongside children’s services and with vulnerable adults.

Responsibilities
  • Building Maintenance and Caretaking: Carrying out routine caretaking tasks, basic repairs, and maintenance to ensure the Centre is safe, functional and well maintained.
  • Problem-Solving and Initiative: Identifying maintenance issues, responding to day-to-day problems as they arise, carry out repairs or report issues to the appropriate staff member.
  • Gardening and Grounds Maintenance: Maintaining gardens and outdoor spaces, including planting, weeding, pruning and general grounds upkeep.
  • Health and Safety: Following health and safety procedures, including the safe use of tools and equipment, manual handling, and identifying and reporting hazards to ensure the Centre is compliant with all requirements.
  • Time Management and Work Planning: Plan and prioritise tasks, manage workloads independently, and complete duties efficiently within set timeframes.
  • Responsibility and Reliability: Taking responsibility for the upkeep and presentation of the Centre and its grounds.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Experience in basic gardening and grounds maintenance (e.g. planting, pruning, mowing, weeding).
  • Ability to carry out basic building maintenance and minor repairs (e.g. changing light fittings, fixing locks, simple DIY).
  • Understanding of health and safety procedures, including safe use of tools and equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and manage daily tasks without close supervision.
  • Physical ability to carry out manual work in indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Able to manage time effectively.
  • Able to prioritise tasks and respond to urgent maintenance issues.
  • Willingness to work flexibly, as required by the Centre’s needs.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Communication skills when interacting with staff, volunteers, and service users.
  • A commitment to the ethos and values of Windsor Women’s Centre.
  • Formal qualification or training in horticulture, gardening, or property maintenance.
  • Experience maintaining community spaces, charities, or support centres.
  • Knowledge of sustainable or eco-friendly gardening practices.
  • Experience with risk assessments and site safety checks.
  • Experience working in environments where safety and discretion are important.
