Job description

The Bookkeeper will play a key role in maintaining accurate and up-to-date financial records for the accounting practice and its clients. This position supports the day-to-day financial operations, ensuring compliance, accuracy, and efficiency across all bookkeeping and payroll functions. The successful candidate will use BrightPay, a computerised payroll system, to manage and process client payrolls.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain detailed records of all financial transactions, including income, expenses, and journal entries using accounting software.
  • Reconcile bank statements and other financial accounts with internal records to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Process payroll using BrightPay - approximately 52 weekly and 25 monthly payrolls. Duties include calculating wages, deductions, and statutory payments (PAYE, National Insurance, pensions). Ensure timely and compliant submission of payroll data etc.
  • Act as the first point of contact for clients, providing updates, answering queries, and maintaining strong client relationships.
  • Assist accountants with year-end procedures, VAT returns, and other financial tasks as required.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Proven experience in bookkeeping and payroll within an accounting practice or similar environment.
  • Proficiency in computerised accounting and payroll systems, including BrightPay, QuickBooks, Xero, or Sage.
  • Strong attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.
  • Good communication skills and ability to liaise with clients.
  • Understanding of payroll regulations, VAT, and general accounting principles.
