Job description

The Pathology departments at University Hospitals North Tees and Hartlepool (NTH) and South Tees Hospitals (STH) are working collaboratively to develop a joint service called Tees Valley Pathology (TVP) with services being delivered on all hospital sites.

We are seeking applications from suitably qualified, enthusiastic HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists with appropriate experience, knowledge and skills to join our scientific teams and participate in the delivery of services as part of this development. The TVP service is also working collaboratively with colleagues at County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust to develop a single Laboratory Information System (LIMS) which is currently in the design stage.

Candidates for the Specialist Biomedical Scientist (Band 6) roles should be HCPC state registered, hold an IBMS Specialist Portfolio and have experience of working various shifts across both core and non-core hours in their chosen discipline or have equivalent expertise that can be demonstrated on their application.

Depending on the level of qualifications and degree of experience from applications for the Specialist Biomedical Scientist (Band 6) posts, consideration will also be given to applicants who are newly qualified HCPC candidates and who may be working towards these qualifications and thus be applicable for employment at Registered Biomedical Scientist (Band 5) level.

Rotation through all sections within the chosen department will provide candidates with a wide range of experience. The role involves taking a leading role in achieving daily workload targets therefore effective interpersonal and communication skills are crucial. The ability to work efficiently as part of a team and be able to prioritise work in order to meet strict deadlines is essential.

Analyse pathology specimens and provide technically accurate results. Be professionally accountable for the interpretation of patients’ results to enable diagnostic and treatment regimes for clinical colleagues. Provide specialist knowledge and assistance to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients within their area of responsibility.

The post holders will be expected to work with senior staff to help support the integration of Haematology, Microbiology or Histopathology from a staff, IT and technological perspective.

The post holders will be expected to work across TVPS attending all sites as necessary.

The post holders will be expected to have specialist knowledge of all sections of the service and be involved in delivering research and development within that service. They will also be expected to participate in the training and development of new, trainee or support staff.

After completion of training, the post holder will be expected to participate in the out of hours rota including late shifts, nights and weekends.

Please note this post may close at sufficient applicants.
