Job description

We are looking to recruit a Nursing Assistant, preferably with experience in caring for patients with palliative care needs.

NVQ 2/3 in Health & Social Care would be an advantage.

The successful applicant will be part of an enthusiastic multi-disciplinary team providing care for patients and families on the Hospice Inpatient Unit.

This post is arranged on a bank basis, with hours provided in line with service demand. There is an expectation to complete at least one shift per month.

Only open to UK Residents to apply as we are a registered Charity, not NHS. Must be available to attend interview in person.

Main duties of the job

To assist trained nursing staff in the delivery of high standards of care in accordance with the policies and procedures in place at Springhill Hospice and within the Nursing team.

About us

This role is based at Springhill Hospice, Rochdale.

Springhill Hospice provides the following palliative care services to the local adult population who are suffering from the effects of life-limiting and terminal illnesses:

16-bed Inpatient unit providing 24-hour medical and nursing care.

Hospice at Home Service - supports people who want to end their days in their own home by providing the support and symptom management they need to be able to do so.

A Day Therapies Centre for up to 16 patients, 4 days a week, offering complementary therapies (e.g. reflexology, aromatherapy and massage); creative and beauty therapies, social activities and clinical support.

Community Service - provides specialist palliative care and support to patients and families in their own homes.

A 24-hour Palliative Care Advice Line for patients, families, carers and health professionals.

Bereavement Support for relatives following loss.

Counselling Services for patients, carers and relatives, provided by a qualified therapist.

An Education Unit - an in-house training facility for hospice staff and local health and social care professionals, with the main focus of training being on the Springhill Palliative Care Education Passport (SPCEP) which ensures that core palliative care skills are taught to all grades of staff.

Aim:

To assist trained nursing staff in the delivery of high standards of care in accordance with the policies and procedures in place at Springhill Hospice and within the Nursing team.

Main responsibilities
Ward Duties:
  1. To work as a member of the nursing team assisting nurses to provide a high standard of care to patients, both on the inpatient unit and within the patients own home.
  2. Assist in general care of patients e.g. hygiene, care of pressure areas, nutritional needs.
  3. Assist in maintaining a high standard of cleanliness.
  4. Perform escort/chaperone duties as directed by the trained nurses.
  5. Inform trained staff of any change in patient’s condition.
  6. Be aware of the need to treat patients as individuals. Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  7. Have an understanding of the principles of infection control and the risks of cross-infection.
  8. Ensure correct policy for care and custody of patients property/valuables is adhered to.
Education
  1. Attend mandatory training programmes and undertake online mandatory training as required.
  2. Report to senior staff any situation/occurrence reported to you by patients, relatives/visitors.
  3. As required by trained staff, undertake training and be assessed on competency by Ward Sister and Senior nurses.
Personnel/Communications
  1. Read, understand and comply with all Hospice policies and procedures, applying the principles as appropriate to role.
  2. To be aware of individual specific responsibilities in respect of the Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults, in relation to role.
  3. Report to trained staff as appropriate.
  4. Participate in the appraisal process.
  5. Communicate effectively both verbally and written. Answer telephone correctly and politely at all times. Refer enquiries to Nurse in charge.
  6. Be aware of procedure for evacuation of patients in case of fire. Know emergency exits. Demonstrate knowledge to trained staff.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Willingness to undertake NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care
  • Hold NVQ Levels 1 and 2.
  • Willingness to undertake NVQ Level 3
Experience
  • Experience of working in a healthcare environment.
  • Evidence of caring for people with palliative care needs.
