Job description
Bank Healthcare Support Worker (Healthcare Students - see criteria)

Please ensure eligibility before applying for this vacancy, as failure to meet criteria will result in automatic withdrawal. This position involves a shortened HCSW training programme, and ineligible candidates should monitor NHS jobs for possible bank HCSW roles.

Eligibility criteria:

  • BSc or MSc Nursing (any specialisation) and Midwifery students who have completed at least one full acute care placement within an NHS trust.

OR

  • University Healthcare students (Medicine/ Nursing/ Midwifery/ Physiotherapy/ Paramedicine/ Occupational Therapy etc.) who have had a significant amount of prior experience (6 months+ within the last 12 months) working as a Healthcare Assistant/ Healthcare Support Worker in an NHS acute care Trust.

If you meet the criteria for this role, you will either need to submit a signed recommendation form from NNUH placement/education staff, or complete an interview with the Practice Development and Education team. Further details will be shared once shortlisting has been completed.

Please note depending on your course speciality, your bank shifts may be aligned with the most relevant department to reflect your area of study.

Also, keep in mind this is a HCSW role so many skills that you can practice within a student capacity cannot be practiced whilst on shift working as a healthcare assistant.

Main duties of the job

You will need enthusiasm, kindness, compassion, and confidence as you will be expected to work with a diverse set of acutely unwell people who each require an individual holistic approach to meet their day-to-day care needs. Daily responsibilities will include:

  • Monitoring and recording of baseline observations for all patients under your daily allocation (blood pressure / temperature / pulse etc.).
  • Escalation of issues to relevant registered member of staff (Nurse, doctor etc.) related to acute deterioration of patient's conditions.
  • Provision of care to meet individual holistic requirements of all patients under your daily allocation including personal care, continence assistance and meal time assistance.
  • Cleaning of equipment and ward areas as and when required.
  • Procurement and handling of clinical samples / swabs.

We will provide uniform and an initial training course to deliver the skills you will need to work in a busy hospital. If you meet the criteria for the shortened induction this will include a eight-hour theory session followed by a minimum of two six-hour supervised shifts working on a ward.

Our PRIDE values of People Focus, Respect, integrity, Dedication and Excellence are important to our team, and to be successful you will need to share our beliefs and values. In particular, you will support our approach to clinical excellence by taking every opportunity to learn and develop your skills and competence in every aspect of your role.

The Staff Bank is an ideal way of starting a career in the Trust, offering flexibility of working hours and the opportunity to gain experience in different areas. The Staff Bank will provide training to enable you to work across the Trust however, adaptation courses are not available.

What we offer:

  • After the HCSW Induction, period of paid supernumerary time
  • Clinical skills support and enhanced skills sessions (where required)
  • Flexibility in training and shifts
  • Ability to work within and try different specialities
