Job description

Band 7 Paediatric Neurological Physiotherapist

This exciting role offers the opportunity to make a real difference to children and families by providing highly specialist paediatric neurological physiotherapy within University Hospitals Birmingham. You will deliver expert assessment and treatment for children with a wide range of neurological conditions, working closely with a supportive multidisciplinary team, including neonatal colleagues, as well as partnering with wider community services to ensure truly holistic care.

As a recognised specialist, you will help shape and advance paediatric neurological practice by contributing to the development, planning, and delivery of intervention programmes and specialist training. You will also offer valued clinical guidance to clinicians, managers, healthcare professionals, and external partners.

In your position as Paediatric Outpatient Neurological Lead, you will drive the neonatal pathway and lead, coordinate, and evaluate our outpatient therapy service. Your role will involve engaging in clinical audit, championing evidence-based practice, supporting or initiating research, and inspiring the next generation through the supervision and development of staff and students.

Based primarily at the Heartlands site, you will also have the opportunity to work across other UHB locations, helping to shape a high-quality, compassionate service for children across the region.

Main duties of the job

The role centres on delivering expert physiotherapy care to children with neurological needs, ensuring thorough assessment and thoughtful, effective treatment. You will work closely with colleagues across the multidisciplinary team and maintain strong links with community services to create a seamless, family-centred approach to care. As the lead for paediatric outpatient neurology, you will guide the development and progression of the neonatal pathway while overseeing the coordination and quality of the outpatient therapy service. The post involves shaping clinical practice through ongoing service evaluation, participation in research and audits, and the promotion of evidence-based approaches. You will also play a key part in developing others by providing supervision, support, and professional guidance to staff and students. Although mainly based at the Heartlands site, you will contribute to paediatric services across other UHB locations when needed.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• Good standard of general education including English language and mathematics, A levels or equivalent Degree in Physiotherapy
• Registered with HCPC as a Physiotherapist Evidence of relevant postgraduate training in specialist area
• Leadership training
• Postgraduate advanced accredited training within specialist area
• Registered member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists
• Registered member of Association of Paediatric Chartered Physiotherapists

Experience

• Relevant postgraduate experience in specialist areas relevant to the post Experience of NHS based work
• Evidence of CPD maintained in a portfolio including recent courses relevant to Neurological physiotherapy
• Evidence of IT skills
• A range of suitable experience of working within a Primary Care setting and/or acute Neurological outpatient paediatric setting
• Ability to use Neurological clinical skills to systematically diagnose/assess patient/client problems
• To understand and evaluate complex situations and information to formulate an appropriate course of action. Ability to frequently modify planned activity to suit individual needs
• Experience of paediatric Neurological physiotherapy with management of complex patients
• Experience of effective staff management and leadership
• Experience of managing students at clinical tutor and supervisor levels
• Experience of training staff groups at all levels
• Evidence of working effectively in partnership with others within multidisciplinary teams and across agencies
• Experience of conducting or being involved in audit, implementing outcome measures and/or research in the specialist area
• Experience of providing Neurological physiotherapy care within a paediatric physiotherapy service
• Considerable experience of NHS work
• Working knowledge of Government initiatives, National Service Frameworks (NSFs) etc.
