Band 6 Senior Occupational Therapist

We are looking for an enthusiastic and forward thinking Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join our Rehabilitation and Recovery service based at Dan Mooney House.

Dan Mooney House is a 15 bedded unit for males with long term complex care needs, situated between two villages namely Knowle and Dorridge in Solihull, and is part of Steps to Recovery.

Dan Mooney House provides rehabilitation in an unlocked facility for patients who are either receiving treatment under Section 3 of the Mental Health Act, or informal patients.

We offer a specialist service within a rehabilitation environment primarily for people with severe and enduring mental health problems and associated behaviours that require an extended period of in‑patient support. A full range of multi‑disciplinary assessments and treatment interventions are offered which have been developed using evidence based best practice to offer an effective service to service users, collaborating with families and carers. The service aims to provide appropriate therapeutic engagement to reduce symptoms of illness, improve service user social functioning, quality of life moving forward and assisting service users to achieve their recovery goals and aspirations for the future.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of rehabilitation interventions including upskilling and improving ADL, social & financial and budgeting skills, physical and mental health interventions for service users who will have a diagnosis of complex psychosis. Support and guidance with housing & accommodation, recreational and vocational interventions.

As the OT in the team, you will have responsibility to assess and develop OT interventions, using a range of assessment and guidelines, including MOHOST and formulations.

You will have the direct support of a Band 7 Lead OT, OT Consultant, other OT S2R staff across the service and activity coordinator.

Job responsibilities
  • Developing personalised programmes of care for service users alongside other team members, which include psychology, medical, pharmacy, nursing and support staff. OT staff are responsible for focusing on developing structured goal orientated interventions to address issues all areas of functioning and to increase independence.
  • Carrying out specific OT assessments to support care planning and any discharge needs. This may include specialised assessments to support funding packages or specialised intervention.
  • To work closely with other partner organisations to develop community based resources and to address barriers for service users to access and develop support networks.
  • The OT staff within our STR service are engaged in QI projects looking at improving service users and families experience of services and are actively engaged in service improvements at all levels.

Person Specification
Experience
  • Has experience of work within mental health settings or in a previous role where mental health awareness is evidenced.
  • Is able to describe support and supervision offered to colleagues, students of all professional groups and support staff.
  • Evidence of detailed assessment skills, participation in team formulation and collaborative planning is clearly documented.
Qualifications
  • Applicant is HCPC registered as an Occupational Therapist.
  • Has listed evidence of training post graduation, to include mandatory training but also evidence of additional training in clinical skills or leadership.
Personal Qualities
  • Is able to demonstrate leadership skills, works well with others and demonstrates good communication skills based on self description.
  • Accesses supervision and maintains links with all professional forums independently.
  • Applicant has an understanding of the importance of providing personalised care in a way that is respectful of a service users cultural needs and diversity.
