Overview

We are looking to recruit an SCPHN qualified School Nurse to join our enthusiastic and innovative School Nursing team. This post will be based at Hobmoor Road Health Centre, 192 Hobmoor Road, B10 9JH.

We are looking for a qualified school nurse with strong skills in clinical leadership and in-depth knowledge of public health. You should also be committed to team working and possess excellent interpersonal skills and be able to lead a multidisciplinary team of school health staff who will work with children, young people and families to identify relevant health needs and ensure these are addressed in line with the agreed service pathways.

Responsibilities
  • Assess the health needs of individual children and the school population within your allocated district and support other districts within the team as needed.
  • Proactively address factors affecting health to ensure that children and young people achieve the best possible outcomes and work with vulnerable children and families to reduce social exclusion and health inequalities.
  • Lead a multidisciplinary team of school health staff to identify health needs and ensure actions align with service pathways.
  • Develop multi-agency partnerships at school and district level.
  • Manage Band 5 nursing colleagues in delivering medical needs training programmes for schools within the caseload.
  • Maximise visibility and accessibility of school health services through local promotion and engagement with schools, pupils (including school ambassadors), partner agencies and the voluntary sector.
  • Mentor pre-registration students and provide long-arm mentoring for post-registration students in line with BCHC guidelines.
  • Undertake holistic assessment of children and young people, write and deliver care plans, and delegate tasks where appropriate.
  • Contribute to multi-agency interventions for children subject to safeguarding, Early Help or SEND.
  • Develop and participate in school partnership agreements and district profiles; use demographic data to identify health trends and plan effective services.
  • Act as a liaison between children, teachers, parents, medical officers, primary health care teams and others.
  • Carry out home visits as required and work in settings other than schools as necessary to meet needs, including delivering a drop-in session in senior schools.
  • Lead allocation meetings to distribute work equitably across the team.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare reports, ensuring confidentiality and supporting other team members in record-keeping.
  • Participate in case conferences, case reviews and core groups where school health interventions are provided.
  • Write court reports as required in conjunction with legal services.
  • Provide cover for colleagues as designated by the Team Leader.
  • Support the medicines in schools policy and participate in trust clinical governance and audit programmes.
  • Use software packages relevant to clinical care and ensure data is entered onto the system in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ensure all activity and outcomes are recorded on Rio electronic patient record and other systems to evidence service activity and effectiveness.
  • Engage in the ChatHealth text messaging service.
  • Work flexibly until 6pm on weekdays and occasional weekends to meet service needs.
  • Undertake the role of duty nurse and lead at allocation meetings.
Qualifications
  • Specialist Community Public Health Nurse – School Nursing qualification or working towards qualifying soon (offer of post conditional on successful course completion).
  • Evidence of post-registration development and training.
