Band 6 Physiotherapist - Early Intervention Team

BAND 6 PHYSIOTHERAPIST - EARLY INTERVENTION TEAM

Secondment/Fixed Term Contract until November 2026

Up to 37.5 hours per week

We are pleased to offer an opportunity to join our forward-thinking Integrated Therapy Team, consisting of occupational therapists, physiotherapists, dietitians and assistants working seamlessly together.

The Early Intervention Therapy Team covers Accident and Emergency, the Emergency Assessment and Discharge Unit and Ambulatory Care primarily.

You will receive protected time for supervision, training and skill development within each specialism provided by supportive clinicians, along with opportunities to build on skills such as student/junior supervision, audit and service development. Main duties of the job

As a Band 6 Physiotherapist you will be responsible for providing holistic therapy assessments to patients on the emergency floor to support admission avoidance and early therapy input. The caseload consists of patients with a variety of conditions who may also require assessment of social need. Good prioritisation, organisational and time management skills is needed to balance clinical and non-clinical duties.

You will be responsible for liaising with members of the wider multidisciplinary team including the Integrated Discharge Team, Accident and Emergency Department co‑ordinators and specialist teams to facilitate discharge and problem solve therapy related delay. The role also includes triaging and negotiating referrals received from the medical and ward teams to ensure they are appropriate.

You will be responsible for non‑clinical duties, including participating in team meetings, in‑service development, training and supervision of students, assistant staff and Band 5 colleagues. You will be key to being actively involved in the measurement and evaluation of your work and current practices using Evidence Based Practice projects, audit and outcome measures. There will be opportunities to work on group projects with your Band 6 peers.

The Early Intervention Team provides a 7‑day rostered service. The post‑holder would be welcome to take advantage of flexible working and may form a pattern to include a one‑in‑two, or greater, occurrence of weekend shifts.

We also support development of our future workforce through our close links with the University of East Anglia, Suffolk College and City College Norwich, providing teaching and placements to apprentices, under and postgraduates.

Job responsibilities
  • To be responsible for delivering specialist assessment and treatment of patients within the Early Intervention Therapy Team
  • To undertake an advanced assessment of patients presenting with complex multiple pathology/social issues who have been identified as fit for discharge within 48 hours. To determine their suitability for discharge, consider alternative options/treatment requirements and to maintain records as an autonomous practitioner
  • To assess and treat own caseload of patients, who may have complex presentations and maintain own records as an autonomous practitioner
  • To assist with teaching and supervision of new team members and students. Also deliver training to multidisciplinary team
  • To assist evaluation of the therapy service provided within the front door specialism and other areas
  • To be actively involved with service development within own area and to implement changes in service delivery as required
  • To be responsible for proactively coordinating workload alongside other team members, Team Leader and Professional Lead for Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy
  • To work a rostered seven-day service within the James Paget University Hospital or in a community setting as required

Education and Qualifications
  • Diploma/Degree/MSc in Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy
  • Current Health Care Professions Council registration
  • CPD record should include evidence of up‑to‑date manual handling, relevant clinical courses and reflections of learning

Knowledge and Experience
  • Experience at Band 5 level within a range of areas: patients with multi‑pathology, including dementia, falls, palliative care and bariatric patients
  • Significant clinical experience to include acute hospital setting and discharge planning
  • Experience of working with a range of professionals within multidisciplinary teams
  • Evidence of acting in a supervisory manner, providing specialist guidance, training and support to other staff or students
  • Evidence of reflective learning
