Assistant / Junior Buyer - Regional Main Contractor

At Hill McGlynn, we are pleased to be working with a well-established and respected regional main contractor to recruit an ambitious and proactive Assistant / Junior Buyer to join their procurement team in Maidstone. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with previous buying experience—ideally in the construction sector—who is looking to build a long-term career with a forward-thinking, growing business.

The Role

As Assistant / Junior Buyer, you will support the procurement function across a range of live construction projects, assisting with the sourcing of materials, negotiating with suppliers, and ensuring timely and cost-effective procurement. You\'ll work closely with site teams, project managers, and senior buyers to ensure projects are well resourced and running smoothly.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assisting in the procurement of construction materials, plant, and equipment
  • Liaising with suppliers to obtain best pricing and availability
  • Raising and processing purchase orders
  • Maintaining and updating procurement records and databases
  • Supporting senior procurement staff with tender analysis and supplier negotiations
  • Working independently on smaller packages and supplier relationships as you develop
About You
  • Previous buying experience is essential (construction sector experience is highly desirable)
  • Background in working for either a main contractor or a specialist subcontractor preferred
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Confident communicator with the ability to build supplier relationships
  • Able to work independently and use your initiative to solve problems
  • Motivated and keen to progress within a supportive team environment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and ideally familiar with procurement software
