Job Summary

Anaesthetic and Recovery Nurse / Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) – Band 5, Agenda for Change. Full-time/part-time positions available at University Hospital of Hartlepool.

Role Overview

As an Anaesthetic and Recovery Nurse/ODP you will work within the peri‑operative care team, providing high quality nursing care in the theatre and recovery areas of a busy NHS Trust.

Key Responsibilities
  • Apply specialist knowledge and theory to practice across a range of peri‑operative procedures.
  • Maintain a safe and psychologically supportive environment for patients, relatives and staff.
  • Provide clinical care to a defined caseload of patients within the acute critical area, analysing, assessing and making clinical judgements as required.
  • Support junior staff and promote their development within the team.
  • Communicate effectively, demonstrating empathy and reassurance when dealing with patients, relatives, carers, colleagues and external agencies.
  • Adhere to policies, procedures and clinical guidelines, proposing improvements when appropriate.
  • Take charge of designated areas in theatre and, where required, lead the operating department in the absence of the Theatre Sister.
  • Safely use and manage complex equipment and pharmaceutical products.
  • Ensure accurate, confidential peri‑operative care documentation.
  • Participate in research, audit and the application of evidence‑based practice; support the implementation of new ideas.
  • Mentor and facilitate the education of staff nurses, ODPs, student nurses, trainee ODPs and theatre support workers.
  • Promote equality, diversity and tackle discrimination and harassment in the workplace.
  • Uphold welfare and safety standards, reducing sickness, accidents and violence against staff.
  • Take responsibility for personal development and maintain a Personal Development Plan.
  • Comply with Trust infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene and environmental hygiene.
  • Maintain communication and working relationships across the multidisciplinary team.
Person Specification
  • Essential qualifications
    • First‑level registration OR minimum NVQ Level 3 in Operating Department Practice.
    • Relevant teaching certificate.
  • Desirable qualifications
    • Diploma in Nursing or Operating Department Practice.
  • Experience
    • Completion of competency package.
    • Minimum 18 months experience in a relevant specialist area.
Additional Information
  • Simultaneous Disclosure and Barring Service (DIS) check required (Enhanced Level). The role has access to children or vulnerable adults.
  • Applicants must have current UK professional registration.
  • Employer is able to offer sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route.
  • All nurses and ODPs are subject to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or Association of Operating Department Practitioners guidelines.
