We are looking for a Works Supervisor (Survey Cell) F/M to join our teams at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) which honours the 1.7 million men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died in the First and Second World Wars, ensuring they will never be forgotten. Our work commemorates the war dead, from building and maintaining our cemeteries and memorials at 23,000 locations in more than 150 countries to preserving our extensive records and archives. Our values and aims, laid out in 1917, are as relevant now as they were 100 years ago.

Contract type: Permanent

Working hours: Full time – 37.5 h per week

Job Description

The Works Supervisor (Inspection) F/M inspects, assesses and evaluates the condition of all our sites and buildings in order to guide the work of operational teams in the field and ensure that the work is carried out in accordance with the Commission's standards and in an efficient manner. He or she may be required to manage the resources (human, equipment and materials) allocated as part of the works maintenance programme and/or various projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect sites and memorials in accordance with the maintenance cycle and in compliance with the Commission's technical standards.
  • Establish detailed diagnoses of the various pathologies affecting built heritage, including precise cost estimates to enable costs to be anticipated.
  • Use expertise to provide recommendations for action to operational teams and assist them in carrying out their tasks by proposing procedures.
  • Accept work as part of the maintenance cycle.
  • Enter technical inspection data into the software provided for this purpose.
  • Provide technical advice in accordance with heritage conservation principles.
  • Write monthly reports to inform management of progress made.
  • May be required to monitor the feasibility, preparation and follow‑up phases of external projects.
  • May be required to consult and collaborate with external service providers for specific diagnostic assignments.
  • May be required to draft calls for tenders for service provision projects.
  • May be required to monitor internal and/or external projects, from the feasibility and preparation phase through to the acceptance of the work, ensuring the autonomous and optimised management of the human, material and financial resources allocated.

  • Valid B driving licence.
Required profile
  • Level of Bac + 2 with significant experience in construction, heritage restoration and building pathologies.
  • Strong interest in architectural history and good knowledge of construction methods and techniques.
  • Ability to draw and understand sketches and plans.
  • Knowledge of building and conservation legislation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software and ideally MS Project.
  • Fluency in English or ability to learn quickly.
  • Required professional qualities: rigour, organisation, decision‑making, written and oral communication, analytical skills.
  • Desire for professional development.
