Underwriting Division
AIG’s underwriters develop insurance solutions that address the exposures of companies and individuals, and embody AIG’s tradition of innovation, bringing to market groundbreaking insurance solutions. AIG’s underwriters help to find insurance solutions for risks from a range of areas, including aviation, environmental, catastrophic events, high net worth individuals, and boardroom liabilities. Responsible for handling new business and reviewing and renewing existing books of business, underwriters are fundamental in generating revenue for AIG. Underwriters are tasked with determining the risk of an insured, whether an individual, or company, and appropriately calculating the premium for the requested coverage.
About the role
Underwriter, A&H Spain, reporting to the Lead UW, Spain will contribute by underwriting new & renewal business, developing, and maintaining relationships with new and existing brokers, building strong client relationships, and working to carry out agreed strategies.
Job Responsibilities
- Evaluates new and renewal policies and endorsements against prescribed criteria to determine if risk qualifies for acceptance; verifies and rates new business; investigates inconsistencies related to risk acceptance; reviews situations not covered by criteria; and develops information for underwriters to isolate problems.
- Manages underwriting to achieve profitable growth, including underwriting new business, renewals, quotes, and other transactions.
- Prepares policy writing instructions and premium billings; analyzes submissions for accuracy of policy issuance information from the underwriter and/or broker, ensuring policies contain all compliance information as indicated on the hand‑off sheet; and checks/signs policies prior to release.
- Supports Group underwriting to achieve profitable growth, including underwriting new business, renewals, quotes, and other transactions.
- Understand the local insurance broker community, and build relationships with brokers and senior management.
- Establish and leverage strong relationships with clients, brokers and partners.
- Apply analytical and quantitative skills.
- Have proficient knowledge of key regulatory requirements.
- Communicate with producers, insureds, bureaus, etc. to ensure common understanding.
- Assist the senior underwriter in preparing business, line reports and agency analysis; complete the audit; prepare underwriting hand‑off sheets and renewal information; assist in reviewing procedures to resolve issues.
- Participate in research projects involving identification and classification data; conduct quality control of issued policies and accurate file maintenance; and review experience and classification.
- Visit producers to establish effective relationships.
- Collaborate with multiple technical, functional, distribution and client/broker management resources, local, regional, and global, across the wider business.
- Build and maintain appropriate, strong, and effective business relationships with stakeholders.
- Drive a culture that promotes collaboration, diversity, and inclusion.
What we’re looking for
- Strong and relevant experience of product and local market experience, with underwriting assistance experience with individual insurance products. Experience with group, travel, specialty, and affinity products would be a plus.
- Fluent in Spanish and English.
- Strong sales and negotiation background: ability to influence others to develop business, negotiate agreement, with a strong understanding of the sales process, including pre‑sale and post‑sale requirements of the business.
- Strong understanding of the local insurance broker community (Corporate, Medium and Individual Brokers).
- Analytical and quantitative skills.
- Strong customer service ethic, with a sound understanding of the business processes.
- Knowledge of key regulatory requirements.
