Controller
Valencia, CA 91381 US
We are seeking a hands‑on Controller to lead day‑to‑day accounting and personally own the close in a lean environment. This is not a purely supervisory role—this leader will roll up sleeves, book journal entries, drive close discipline, and partner closely with Operations and Supply Chain to strengthen inventory integrity, costing accuracy, and audit/lender readiness.
Role Focus
- Personally own the monthly close (hands‑on journal entries, reconciliations, balance sheet integrity) in a lean environment
- Lead manufacturing accounting with deep inventory rigor: standard costing, BOMs, variances, inventory controls, and reserves (E&O/obsolescence, PPV, etc.)
- Establish a strong operating cadence with Operations and Supply Chain (in‑person huddles); proactively challenge POs/transactions when they don’t look right
- Maintain audit readiness (standard audit + frequent lender reporting/covenant support)
- Lead the weekly update of the 13‑week cash flow forecast with clear variance explanations and forward‑looking insights
Key Responsibilities
- Lead day‑to‑day accounting operations including general ledger activity, AP/AR oversight, and month‑end close execution
- Own month‑end/quarter‑end/year‑end close, including journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation
- Ensure strong balance sheet integrity (reconciliations, rollforwards, substantiation, and clean support for all key accounts)
- Own inventory accounting and controls, including:
- Standard cost maintenance and discipline (BOM accuracy, overhead concepts, variance analysis)
- Cycle count governance, inventory reconciliations, and adjustment approvals
- Reserve support (E&O/obsolescence, PPV/variances) and defensible documentation
- Partner with external auditors, tax advisors, and lenders to ensure timely deliverables and well‑supported workpapers
- Drive process improvements across close, reporting, and ERP workflows (clean‑up, standardization, and scalability)
- Support weekly cash cadence and the 13‑week cash forecast; communicate variance drivers and risk/opportunity visibility to leadership
- Partner cross‑functionally with Operations and Supply Chain to improve purchasing discipline, inventory accuracy, and cost visibility
Team / Scope
- AP/AR functions report into the Controller; works closely with Cost Accounting
- No Senior Accountant currently
- Payroll currently aligned to HR (expected to transition toward Finance over time; likely payroll specialist hire in the future)
- Multi‑entity experience is a plus (potential consolidation/clean‑up over time)
Success in ~6 Months
- Fully owns the accounting close and reporting cadence; identifies and implements improvements that increase close efficiency and quality
- Weekly 13‑week cash flow forecast is accurate, forward‑looking, and trusted by leadership, with clear variance explanations
- Inventory, standard costs, and reserves (E&O, PPV, variances) are clean, well‑supported, and audit‑ready
- Established a strong operating cadence with Ops and Supply Chain and is viewed as a trusted, detail‑oriented finance partner who pushes back constructively
Qualifications
Required
- 7–10+ years of progressive accounting experience with manufacturing + inventory depth (standard costing, BOMs, variances, controls)
- Demonstrated hands‑on close ownership (journal entries, reconciliations, balance sheet stewardship)
- Experience working with external auditors; comfortable supporting lender / covenant reporting requirements
- Strong Excel skills; ERP fluency and ability to improve processes—not just operate them
- Clear communication, strong judgment, and confidence partnering cross‑functionally
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance (Master’s a plus)
- CPA preferred (or strong equivalent technical foundation)
- Experience with SAP Business ByDesign or similar manufacturing ERP; master data/process clean‑up experience a plus
- PE‑backed / mid‑market environment; multi‑entity accounting experience
Benefits
- HMO fully paid for self + family
- Compensation: $160K–$180K base + 5–10% bonus
- On‑site: 5 days/week
