Overview

AWS is set to introduce the inaugural European Sovereign Cloud (ESC), marking a significant development in Utility Computing (UC). We are seeking experienced systems engineers with a strong background in cloud operations to spearhead this initiative. As part of the AWS Managed Operations team, you will help build and lead operations and development teams delivering high-availability AWS services for EU customers, including EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, and Bedrock. Responsibilities

• Oversee the launch of the ESC in 2025, collaborating with global AWS teams.
• Influence the evolution of AWS services and technology to meet ESC requirements.
• Collaborate with technology leaders to enhance day-to-day operations and improve availability, reliability, latency, performance, and efficiency of the ESC.
• Operate and improve one of the largest software systems; review operational health, produce actionable bug reports, and follow change management processes before implementing changes in production.
• Address and resolve the team’s backlog of operational issues; develop scripts to facilitate root-cause analysis and faster problem resolution.
• Occasionally participate in on-call rotations to resolve incidents out-of-hours.

Qualifications / Eligibility

• Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
• Legal right to work in Germany (relocation support available for EU applicants).
• On-call responsibility may be involved.
• Experience supporting cloud systems or other services; proficient in troubleshooting for performance, reliability, or availability issues.
• Experience executing standard operating procedures and following operational best practices.
• Proficiency in scripting (Bash, Python, or Ruby) or coding in a modern language (Java, TypeScript, or similar).
• Experience leading cross-organizational efforts and managing teams toward common goals.
• Experience performance tuning and optimizing fleet utilization.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or similar).
