Scientist (f/m/d) - Metabolomics Core Technology Platform

Do you enjoy working at the interface between cutting-edge analytics and biomedical research?

Do you like taking the initiative, interacting with collaborators, and driving projects forward?

We are looking for a highly motivated and proactive scientist to support our metabolomics projects and actively shape groundbreaking research in collaboration with groups of the Medical Faculty Heidelberg.

By joining our team, you will directly contribute to pioneering biomedical, cancer and translational research, helping to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies with real-world impact on patient care.

The Metabolomics Core Technology Platform (MCTP) is supported by the Excellence Strategy of Heidelberg University as well as the German Cancer Research Centre (DKFZ) and is located at the Centre for Organismal Studies (COS) Heidelberg. Our platform is a motivated and interdisciplinary team providing state-of-the-art metabolomics for the Heidelberg and Mannheim Life Science Campus and external national and international cooperation partners.

Your tasks
  • You lead and support metabolomics projects in close collaboration with top research groups at the Medical Faculty.
  • You develop and optimize innovative LC-MS and GC-MS methods for the analysis of diverse biological matrices, including human samples.
  • You act as a scientific contact person for our users: advising them on experimental design, sample preparation and data interpretation.
  • You contribute to the continuous improvement of workflows, quality standards and documentation within the core facility.
  • You can contribute to scientific publications, grant applications and method development projects.
Requirements
  • Hands‑on experience and knowledge in mass spectrometry and chromatography.
  • Strong motivation to interact with and support collaborators in a service‑oriented environment; you enjoy explaining, discussing and troubleshooting together.
  • High level of self‑motivation, reliability and ownership of your projects; hands‑on, solution‑oriented working style.
  • Experience in scientific publishing is welcome.
  • Fluency in English is required; proficiency in German is a strong advantage for working with clinical and local partners.
  • PhD degree in analytical chemistry, biological or food chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, pharmacy or a comparable natural science discipline.
  • Experience in a core facility, service laboratory or similar user‑oriented setting is an advantage.
We offer
  • A dynamic, friendly and highly interdisciplinary team, where collaboration, openness and initiative are genuinely appreciated. We value people who bring in their ideas, challenge routines and help to move the platform forward.
  • A state‑of‑the‑art laboratory infrastructure with up‑to‑date mass spectrometry and chromatography systems, providing excellent conditions for high‑impact analytical work and method development.
  • A broad and diverse project portfolio spanning basic biology, translational and clinical research – ideal if you like variety and scientific exchange.
  • Room to grow: support for further training and additional qualification in mass spectrometry‑based analytics, data analysis and related fields.
  • The opportunity to build a visible profile at the Heidelberg life science campus, through close interaction with groups at the Medical Faculty, DKFZ, EMBL and other partners.
  • A unique working environment in Heidelberg, one of Germany’s most picturesque and historically rich cities, embedded in a vibrant international scientific community with high quality of life and many cultural and recreational opportunities.
