A prominent research institution in Berlin is seeking a candidate for a research position in philosophy. This role involves conducting research on critical epistemology and supporting the project leaders. The ideal applicant holds an MA in philosophy and possesses excellent English skills. Opportunities for mentorship and collaboration are available.
The CRITICAL AGENCY project group (funded by the DFG's Emmy Noether Programme) researches critique as it is manifest in critical encounters: critique does not always land; some critics are systematically ignored, some talk past each other, and sometimes people have only limited access to the resources they need to develop a critical stance. In such cases, critical agency, i.e. the capacity to put forward critique that is actually taken up as critique, is limited. The research group investigates what critical agency consists of and what circumstances promote or inhibit it. Particular attention is paid to the roles that understanding and ignorance play in critical encounters – on the part of critics, addressees and bystanders. In order to answer philosophical questions arising from our real-world practices, the project theorises critical agency with the help of ethnographic resources such as thick descriptions, field work, interviews, etc. The project thus develops an ethnographically informed political epistemology that examines the interaction between sociopolitical and epistemological aspects of critical agency.
