Overview

Provide radiation therapy to patients as prescribed by physician according to established standards and practices.

Responsibilities

Delivers a prescribed and planned course of radiation therapy to patients. Check prescription, diagnosis, chart, patient identification, etc. Schedule patients and explain procedure pre- and post-treatment. Answer questions and reassure patient. Interface with physicist, Dosimetrist and mold tech at initiation of treatment or when required. Prepare room and equipment for patient according to the prescription, immobilization devices, field size, treatment devices, distance, lead (Pb), protection devices, etc. Transfer patient to treatment couch. Be aware of IVs and catheters, etc. Withhold treatment if indicated by patient's condition, etc. Maintain visual and/or audible contact with patient during treatment. Check daily treatment time and deliver prescribed dose. Maintain patient markings. Change these according to physician's direction. Documents daily assessment, treatment record and any other pertinent information. Performs weekly check films of all treated areas; process and file same. Reinforce recommendations given to the patient by the physician, dietitian, etc., concerning reaction to treatment and care of the radiated area (dressings, hygiene, etc.), prevention or treatment of generalized and local side effects. Detects, reports and documents equipment malfunction to chief therapist, physicist and/or Radiation Oncologist. Documents pertinent information in log book. Assist in tumor localization in simulator and works efficiently while performing procedure. Obtains patient's consent for procedures when required. Exercises sound professional judgment in treatment delivery. Positions patient according to the setup instructions while respecting the patient's comfort and modesty. Maintain records, reports, files as required. Collect statistics as directed. Documents pertinent and legible information on the treatment record. Maintains visual and audible contact with the patient throughout the treatment and avoids distractions. Treats patient with empathy and a caring attitude on a constant basis. Schedules patient's appointments with regards to their personal lives and needs. Maintains treatment, darkrooms, materials and equipment as needed for patients in a ready state. Demonstrates initiative and willingness to assist others when required. Utilizes spare time appropriately.

Qualifications

Two years experience as a radiation therapist preferred. Completion of course in radiation therapy.
