A leading European university in Cologne is seeking a candidate for a Professorship in General and Comparative Linguistics (W2) with tenure track (W3). The successful applicant will develop innovative research directions and engage in high-quality teaching, utilizing modern methods to enhance learning. Candidates should demonstrate a proven track record in research and teaching in the field of linguistics. This position is initially limited to 5 years with opportunities for career development.
The University of Cologne has 6 Faculties covering a broad spectrum of disciplines and has developed internationally outstanding research profile areas. The Department of Linguistics combines typological, diachronic and phonetic approaches in the study of communicative interaction and plays a leading role in all collaborative initiatives across the Cologne Language Sciences.
The successful candidate will further develop Cologne General Linguistics by applying state of the art methods and establishing innovative research directions. The applicant will have a clear concept for modern, engaging teaching that covers all areas of general linguistics and embraces the potential of digital learning and teaching tools. Research is expected to be centred around linguistic typology, with a particular focus on theoretically motivated, comparative research on communicative interaction. Previous experience with a range of empirical methods in language documentation as well as an anchoring in the study of non‑European languages are essential.
Relevant teaching experience as well as experience in acquiring third‑party funding is expected, as is the willingness to engage with existing interdisciplinary and inter‑faculty research initiatives, such as the current profile area Skills and Structures in Language and Cognition or the Collaborative Research Center Prominence in Language, while new and innovative cooperative projects should also be developed. Close collaboration with colleagues from the various fields of linguistics and a dedication to networking between the different linguistics specializations at the University of Cologne are considered essential.
The applicant should have a proven track record of high‑quality research as evidenced through publications in internationally recognised scientific publication outlets with quality assurance. In addition, experience in the construction and curation of digitally archived language corpora is desirable. The involvement in innovative data collection and processing initiatives (including research data management) will further be considered in the evaluation of applicants, as will be experience in academic self‑administration as well as the promotion of early career researchers.
The University of Cologne provides a stimulating academic environment with a wide range of career development opportunities as well as support services for dual‑career couples and family‑friendly working conditions. The position is available at the earliest possible date and is initially limited to 5 years. Formal requirements are detailed in Section 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine‑Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz – HG NRW). As a rule, the teaching load comprises nine semester hours per week (i.e., two hours per week is one 90‑minute course per semester). The tenure decision for a permanent W3‑professorship will be based on the results of a tenure evaluation to be held in the 5th year after entering into office in accordance with the Regulations for Quality Assurance in Tenure Track Procedures (TT‑Oplus) at the University of Cologne.
The University of Cologne promotes equal opportunities and diversity. Women will be considered preferentially in accordance with the Equal Opportunities Act of North Rhine‑Westphalia (Landesgleichstellungsgesetz – LGG NRW).
