Zusammenfassung

A leading cloud computing service provider in Berlin is seeking experienced systems engineers to spearhead the European Sovereign Cloud initiative. You will oversee operations, collaborate with global teams, and enhance AWS services' reliability and performance. We are looking for candidates with expertise in systems engineering, scripting skills, and a solid understanding of infrastructure management in cloud environments.

Overview

AWS is set to introduce the inaugural European Sovereign Cloud (ESC), marking a significant development in utility computing (UC). To spearhead this initiative, we are actively seeking experienced systems engineers with a strong background in automation and operations. As part of the AWS Managed Operations team, you will play a pivotal role in building and leading operations and development teams dedicated to delivering high-availability AWS services, including EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, and Bedrock, exclusively for EU customers. Responsibilities
  • Oversee the launch of the ESC in 2025, work closely with global AWS teams, and influence the evolution of AWS services and technology.
  • Collaborate with technology leaders, contribute to the enhancement of day-to-day operations, and ensure improvements in availability, reliability, latency, performance, and efficiency of the ESC.
  • Occasionally participate in on-call rotations to resolve incidents outside of standard hours.
  • Aim to deliver scalable services and a high-availability experience for EU customers; contribute to building a best-in-class development and operations team aligned with AWS’ commitments.
About the program and team

European Sovereign Cloud (ESC) is part of AWS Utility Computing (UC). AWS UC provides innovations across Compute, Database, Storage, IoT, Platform, and Productivity Apps services. Managed Operations engineers engage with AWS customers who require specialized security solutions for cloud services.

Eligibility & Qualifications
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Candidate must be a national of an EU member state and residing in the EU to operate the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
  • Amazon will provide relocation support for successful applicants relocating within the European Union.
  • Employees will participate in an on-call rota.
  • Demonstrated expertise in systems engineering working with hardware, software, networking, and operating systems.
  • Experience scripting processes in a language such as Bash, Python, or Ruby.
  • Solid understanding of Linux and networking, and ability to troubleshoot and anticipate problems affecting performance, reliability, or availability of software systems.
  • Ability to lead the creation, revision, and/or improvement of standard operational procedures (SOPs) and drive operational best practices.
  • Experience with monitoring frameworks (e.g., CloudWatch, Datadog, Grafana, Elastic or similar).
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and working cross-organizationally on strategic team efforts requiring coordination across multiple teams.
  • Experience supporting services in AWS or other cloud environments.
  • Experience operating 24x7 high-availability, distributed software applications and performance tuning to optimize fleet utilization.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or similar).
