Overview

Volunteer Board Member (Unpaid) at the Mennonite New Life Centre of Toronto (MNLCT)

Term: 2 years, renewable for up to two additional periods.

The Mennonite New Life Centre of Toronto (MNLCT) provides newcomers and immigrants with tools and resources to prosper socially, economically, and healthfully. The organization aims to foster community engagement, support newcomer settlement and integration, and advance social equality through gender justice and anti-oppression practices.

The Board of Directors provides strategic governance, ensuring responsible, ethical, and legal governance and financial management, while ensuring MNLCT has adequate resources to fulfill its mission. This is a governance board; operational responsibilities are delegated to the Executive Director and staff.

Roles and responsibilities
  • Mission: Understand and support MNLCT’s mission, policies, programs, and needs, including the role of the Mennonite Church in the foundation, culture, and values of the organization. Support the mission to facilitate newcomer settlement and holistic services and community engagement, within a gender justice and anti-oppression framework.
  • Governance: Adhere to MNLCT’s bylaws and Board Governance Policies.
  • Oversight: Participate in governance by providing strategic direction, setting policies, and overseeing activities to align with the mission and vision.
  • Fiduciary Duty: Uphold the organization’s best interests with prudence, good faith, honesty, integrity, and transparency.
  • Strategic Planning: Contribute to the development and implementation of MNLCT’s strategic plan, including setting goals and evaluating progress toward the mission.
  • Financial Oversight: Review and approve the annual budget, financial reports, and audit findings to ensure fiscal responsibility and compliance.
  • Fundraising and Resource Development: Support fundraising by identifying potential donors, cultivating relationships, and advocating for the organization to secure resources.
  • Community Engagement: Serve as ambassadors for MNLCT, promoting its mission and impact to stakeholders and the public.
  • Board Meetings and Committees: Attend and participate in the Annual General Meeting, board meetings, committee meetings, and other relevant gatherings; read materials in advance and come prepared.
  • Board Development: Participate in onboarding, training, and evaluation processes to enhance board effectiveness and governance practices; engage in learning about the newcomer community served by MNLCT.
  • Legal and Ethical Compliance: Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and ethical standards related to nonprofit governance and reporting.
  • Risk Management: Identify and assess risks to operations, reputation, and mission, and help develop risk mitigation strategies.
  • Evaluation and Accountability: Evaluate the performance of the Executive Director and leadership, providing feedback to support organizational effectiveness.
  • Conflict Resolution: Address conflicts of interest or disagreements constructively, prioritizing MNLCT’s best interests.
  • Maintaining Confidentiality: Protect the confidentiality of information related to Board meetings and discussions.
Qualifications

  • Leadership experience in the nonprofit sector, government sector, business, or related fields
  • Strategic thinking and the ability to provide clear direction for the organization
  • Willingness to devote time and energy to the organization, including attending board meetings, serving on committees, and participating in events
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in fundraising, donor relations, finance, or campaign management is an asset
