Your Opportunity

While working in an acute care setting, the Unit Clerk will function as a receptionist in a fast‑paced nursing unit. The Unit Clerk provides clerical support to staff and physicians on the nursing unit. This includes handling or referring incoming phone calls, greeting and directing visitors and patients and ensuring that the whereabouts of staff is known at all times. The Unit Clerk manages the information flow between physicians, nurses and allied health professionals and works directly with the Charge Nurse/Unit Manager to manage the flow of patients into and out of the unit. The role also includes relaying information related to admissions, transfers and discharge of patients, diagnostic tests, medical treatments, medications and pre‑ and post‑operative treatments as requested. The Unit Clerk manages patient records and charts and may prepare and submit health care billings on behalf of physicians for a variety of procedures, treatments and services.

Description

As a Unit Clerk, you will be responsible for the efficient flow of communication between health professionals, departments, patients and families while maintaining confidentiality of patient information. You will also be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks which may include reception, greeting and directing visitors, patients and health professionals, maintaining patient records and charts, transcribing and processing physician orders as well as scheduling patient tests and/or treatments. You will also be responsible for performing a range of administrative activities in support of the unit.

Required Qualifications

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program.

Additional Required Qualifications

A one‑year Unit Clerk certificate (with practicum component) from a recognized post secondary institution. A recognized course in medical terminology. Exceptional communication, organizational skills and attention to detail. The ability to independently & appropriately prioritize in an atmosphere of competing demands and frequent interruptions. The ability to work collaboratively with multiple employees. Availability for 12 hour shifts on both day and night shifts is a firm requirement.

Preferred Qualifications

At least two years of acute care Unit Clerk experience. Good understanding of hospital infection control practices and methods to protect patient confidentiality. Experience with ordering of supplies and forms. Experience with ESP/WFM/ePeople timekeeping and/or scheduling, Netcare, and Excel. Experience working with diverse communities or groups (i.e. ethno‑cultural, racialized, faith‑based, 2S LGBTQI+, vulnerable, marginalized, persons with disabilities, etc.).
