Job summary

A leading insurance firm in Calgary, Alberta, seeks an Underwriting Assistant to support underwriters with critical tasks including initial analysis, endorsement referrals, and policy management. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of underwriting processes, excellent analytical and communication skills, and at least three years of relevant experience. Knowledge of both English and French is a plus. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to important operational processes within the firm.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years of related work experience in an office environment.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and French is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Perform initial underwriting analysis and documentation.
  • Handle majority of endorsement referral requests without underwriting involvement.
  • Establish support needs for new and renewal policies.
  • Analyze account-specific information for Underwriter review.
  • Liaise between the field and processing centers.
  • Coordinate account processing and servicing.
  • Lead pre-renewal meetings.
  • Prepare and execute underwriting/pricing exhibits.
  • Manage account documentation and ensure file completeness.
  • Communicate with external producers/customers.

Under general supervision, is responsible for providing Underwriters with information necessary to make prudent underwriting decisions and to support the underwriting lifecycle from pre-submission through policy issuance and renewal (marketing, underwriting analysis, sales, service and administrative).

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs initial underwriting analysis and documentation inclusive of summarizing insured operations, set up and run initial pricing analysis.
  • Handles majority of endorsement referral requests without underwriting involvement such as analyzing and resolving endorsement referrals, make recommendations independently including agency engagement for clarification or missing information.
  • Establishes support needs for new and renewal policies (i.e., identify and gather relevant account information to quote or issue policies) with minimal interaction of Underwriter.
  • Analyzes account specific information and summarizes information and findings for Underwriter review (i.e. loss information, description of operations, financials, risk control reports).
  • Works as a liaison between the field and processing centers to ensure timely account set-up, clearing, rating, issuance and renewal prep activities.
  • Coordinates account processing and servicing.
  • Leads pre-renewal meetings to build renewal schedule of key activities (missing information, updated applications, etc.).
  • Independently prepares and executes underwriting/pricing exhibits including updated exposures, rating and pricing worksheets, and updated account information.
  • Manages account documentation and ensures file completeness and quality (correspondence, proposals, agreement letters, endorsements, cancellations, etc.).
  • Communicates with external producers/customers and serves as the first-line point of contact on account related matters while proactively identifying opportunities for up sell or account rounding.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Property and Casualty underwriting including insurance products, policy processing procedures and documentation.
  • Strong time management, analytical and communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on multiple tasks.
  • Strong capability to advise and coach others.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience and the ability to interact with a wide-variety of people on a daily basis in person, via telephone and email.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite as well as other business-related software.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent experience. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Typically a minimum of three years of related work experience in an office environment.
  • Bilingual proficiency (English and French) are considered assets.
