Job Description

This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

This position has an initial appointment of 4 months (September 1 to December 31, 2026). Salary will be commensurate with experience in accordance with Schedule D of the Collective Agreement between the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta and the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta.

Location - This role is fully remote. The course is taught online and asynchronously.

The Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta invites applications for a Term Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) Instructor to teach Organizational Communication in the Master of Arts in Communication and Technology (MACT) program.

MACT is a professional graduate program designed for experienced practitioners and managers seeking applied, theory-informed approaches to communication, leadership, and organizational practice. Students are typically senior-level professionals, and course topics frequently inform MACT capstone projects.

Responsibilities
  • Teach a graduate-level course in Organizational Communication in an online, asynchronous format.
  • Deliver applied instruction grounded in foundational and contemporary communication theory.
  • Support and engage a cohort of professional, practice-oriented graduate students.
  • Assess student work and provide timely, constructive feedback.
  • Contribute to a high-quality learning experience aligned with the MACT program learning outcomes.
Qualifications
  • PhD in Communication, Organizational Studies, Media Studies, Sociology, or a related field; or a Master’s degree with substantial professional experience and demonstrated expertise in organizational communication.
  • Strong working knowledge of communication and organizational theory.
  • University-level teaching experience.
  • Experience teaching online and/or asynchronous courses.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Industry or applied professional experience in organizational communication, management, leadership, consulting, media, or related fields.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas:
    • Critical organizational communication
    • Group or organizational dynamics
    • Leadership and management theory (including stakeholder communication)
    • Media theory
    • Complexity or systems theory
    • Rhetoric and organizational storytelling
  • Experience supervising or mentoring applied research or capstone-style projects.
  • Experience teaching professionally oriented and/or internationally diverse student cohorts.
