Job Description

BASIC FUNCTION: The Assistant Caretaker is responsible for the routine cleaning, comfort and safety of the school’s facilities. The Assistant Caretaker provides assistance to the school’s Head Caretaker with the physical activities of operating the school building.

Working Relationship

The Assistant Caretaker reports to the Head Caretaker. In the absence of the Head Caretaker, accepts direction from Caretaker 1 and / or Principal. The Assistant Caretaker also accepts direction from the evening Custodial Co-ordinator. At all times the Assistant Caretaker fills a service role to students, teachers and persons in the school community.

Qualifications
  • Minimum education: Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Experience: Institutional custodial experience is desired.
  • Skills: English reading, writing and verbal communication; ability to interact with students, staff and public.
  • Knowledge: general knowledge of institutional cleaning methods and products; ability to operate cleaning equipment (polishers, auto scrubbers, etc.).
  • Availability to work day or afternoon shifts during breaks and in-service days.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
Physical Requirements

Good general fitness; ability to lift / carry 20 kg (45 lbs) and move it 20 m (60 ft).

Position Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain cleanliness of the facility: cleaning procedures, vacuuming, dusting, sanitizing; cleaning and disinfecting fixtures; chalkboard maintenance; waste disposal; graffiti removal; window and glass cleaning; light fixtures; floor maintenance; provide written reports when necessary.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies: clean and maintain equipment; manage supplies in custodial closet.
  • Provide direction and orientation to casual staff: assist in orientation of replacement staff and issue / collect keys.
  • Perform related duties: maintain relationships, check security, assist groups, setup for events, monitor permits, receive shipments, respond to emergencies, remain on site, perform duties during school breaks, report incidents, energy saving practices, learn HMIS / SDS, other duties as assigned.
Performance Appraisal

Performance appraisal conducted by the Operations Supervisor in consultation with the Head Caretaker.
